Scripps Ranch Softball Association (SRSA) kicked off the 2002 spring season with an exciting parade of teams at opening ceremonies. Under blue skies and gorgeous sunshine, 39 teams, from the Pink Flamingos to the Senior Citizens, marched across Cypress Canyon waving American flags. Angela Giolzetti led the entire league in singing the national anthem. Mike and Sherrie Carney, in recognition of their years of service to the league, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Kaylee Wilson concluded the ceremonies by singing "God Bless America."
The regular season runs through Saturday, May 18, when closing day ceremonies will take place and champions will be determined in several divisions. All players receive participation trophies. The 9th annual Scripps Ranch all-star tournament will take place from Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 2, with teams from throughout San Diego taking on our tournament teams.
While the season lasts only a few months for most players and parents, a dedicated group of board members works year-round. They try to ensure a fun recreational experience for the girls, while providing strong skills development and challenging competition.
This year, our league celebrates several notable accomplishments including more player clinics, several coaches clinics, new storage sheds and batting cages, more inter-league play, and a dynamic sponsorship program.
Ben Collins' BU10 White, pictured below, won the Presidio Cup championship in soccer for the second year in a row. The team beat Ramona Intra 4-2, with two overtime goals by James Vecchio. The team also won the division championship with a 12-1-1 record. Each member of the team scored a goal during the season. This was truly a team effort with Goalie Taylor Peckham allowing only 16 goals all season.
Competitive team tryouts for U9 to U14 are scheduled for the week of April 8-12 at the community park. Any questions, call the Scripps Ranch Soccer Club hotline at 974-5393. You also can check [www.scrippsranch.com/soccer].
Recreational team sign-ups will be held the first two Saturdays in May at Jerabek Elementary School. Children who will turn age 5 during 2002 are eligible to start playing. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate to registration.
