The Scripps United Boys Under 14 and 15 soccer teams successfully completed their England Soccer Tour last month. The trip was fantastic as the boys trained with Bolton Wanderer's, Derby County, and David Beckham Academy coaches at their respective facilities--which in itself was awe inspiring. The team competed against three local boys' teams in Bolton, Manchester, and Saffron Walden, just outside of London.

Following the game at the Cheadle Hulme School in the Manchester area, the team was treated to an English afternoon "tea," which included sandwiches, tea, and cookies. Following the Saffron Walden game, they enjoyed a traditional English fish and chips dinner and went for a swim in the school's pool.

In addition to playing soccer and training, the boys enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the "Reebok" Stadium complex, home of Bolton Wanderer's, and "Old Trafford" Stadium, home of the famous Manchester United Soccer Club! While training at Derby, the team received a surprise visit from USA National Team and Derby County midfielder Benny Feilhaber. He shared his experiences growing up in California and playing professional soccer in Europe and representing his country.

Sightseeing was also a large part of this trip, where the boys toured the historic towns of Chester and Cambridge and spent a day and a half in London. Chester is an ancient and quaint Roman walled city with many historic buildings. In the university town of Cambridge the boys walked through the historic university streets and "punted" along the river in traditional boats.

In London the group had free time and experienced a variety of sights such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, and Piccadilly Square. They experienced transportation in the "Tube," double deck buses, and English cabbies. They attended high tea, toured the national galleries, China town, the Tower of London, and rode on the "London Eye"--just to name a few activities.

Evenings were spent eating meals together in local restaurants and pubs while watching the Euro 2008 semifinal and final soccer games. There are too many memories to recount them all, and it was a trip of a lifetime for these kids and the adults who accompanied them. We hope to do it again!
