Scripps Ranch Schools Committee (SRSC)

Impact of Budget Crisis

The state budget deficit has led to a reduction of $80 million for the San Diego Unified School District's operating budget. In one week in March each principal was provided with a proposed budget for the next school year and required to propose cuts at their site by the end of that week. Each school had to propose cuts in areas including teaching, administrative, and nursing staff.

None of the Scripps Ranch elementary schools will have a vice principal under the proposed cuts. Some schools may be forced to close their libraries and media centers. Also, central office cuts will impact our schools. For example, onsite police officers at high schools, as well as nursing, special education, and janitorial staff could all be reduced. Further, many newer teachers to the district will receive notices indicating that they may not have a position next school year. The bumping of teachers with less seniority will occur, and schools do not have a say in which teachers they keep.

These proposed budget cuts will have a dramatic, negative effect on the quality of the instructional program. When word got out about how dire the budget situation is, Scripps Ranch in its usual fashion, rallied to raise awareness of the issue. Each school urged parents to contact their elected officials and the board trustees to voice their opinions.

As of press time, at its March 25 meeting, the Scripps Ranch Schools Committee was expected to discuss ways the community can work to minimize the cuts prior to the state's approval of its budget. I encourage you to write a letter to our governor, state representatives, and the school board. Sample letters and information can be found at:

New Boundary Vote

The school board delayed the vote on new boundaries for Scripps Ranch elementary schools due to the budget crisis. As of press time, the boundary issue was to be addressed at the March 25 board meeting. For updates, visit the SRCA website at [www.scrippsranch.org].
