Hidden Valley House Auxiliary

If you are a victim of relationship or sexual violence, do you know where to find help or a temporary safe haven? The Center for Community Solutions (CCS), a nonprofit agency founded in 1969, operates a North County domestic violence shelter called Hidden Valley House (HVH). Experts say that at this time of year--shortly after the holidays--organizations like CCS see an uptick in calls for help and an increase in the client population at the shelter.

For more than 14 years our local HVH Auxiliary has helped provide basic necessities for shelter clients. Each month we meet with CCS and HVH staff

to discuss their immediate needs, which vary based on season, number, ages of children, and so forth. We publicize those in the SRCA Newsletter to make it easy for community members to help.

This month their supplies of diapers, blankets, and strollers are low. Your donations can be dropped off at the Scripps Ranch Library, the home of Ellen Hawkins at 11528 Wills Creek Road, or the Baby Vie store in the SR Marketplace on Scripps Poway Parkway.

If you are interested in attending our monthly meetings--usually held at noon on the first Friday of every month--please contact Lauretta Johnson at 695-6708 or [[email protected]].

Winery Tour in February for Women's Club

We're looking for energetic, community-minded women to join our club. To fulfill that goal, we have a contest going: the current member who recruits the most new members will receive free dues for next year! We will welcome all new members at a coffee in February.

Wine tasting and a tour of Orfila Vineyards in Escondido promises to be a fun activity on Saturday, Feb. 23, for members and their guests. The boutique winery, nestled in the San Pasqual Valley 30 minutes from San Diego, opened in 1994 and offers Rhone-style wines. Since opening, the vineyards have received more than 1,300 medals in national and international competitions.

Our annual fundraiser is coming up next month on Saturday, Mar. 16, and will feature a Saint Patrick's Day theme. We'll donate proceeds from this event to Scripps Ranch High School girls in the form of a college scholarship. Also, our club donates to numerous community organizations within Scripps Ranch.

For more information on any of these activities, please call our friendly membership chair, Susie Hill, at 847-9411. Also, visit [www.srwomensclub.org]. New members are always welcome!

In Memoriam

Dedicated library volunteer Dorothy Webster Ansoff (above) passed away on Dec. 30 at the age of 89. Dorothy and her late husband, Dr. Igor Ansoff, were great library supporters. She started volunteering in 1989 in our storefront library, continuing for more than 20 years.

Dorothy was beloved and very appreciated by library staff. A celebration of her life was held in January--appropriately--at the library. Memorial gifts can be directed to the San Diego Public Library Foundation on behalf of the Scripps Ranch branch or to the SRFOL.

Membership

Become a true Friend of our Library by joining SRFOL. Memberships start at $5 for students and seniors. To celebrate the opening of the new San Diego Central Library, life memberships are available through August at the discounted rate of $250 per person--the usual rate is $500 per person. We also have several events in February, including a theater group night and an evening social for friends and couples. We will see A Feminine Ending at the Scripps Ranch Theatre and have a pre-play party on Saturday, Feb. 9. The social gathering--a "TGI"--will be at a member's home on Friday, Feb. 22. On Friday, Mar. 1, we will celebrate birthdays at a "birthday babes" lunch.

We'd love to have you participate in these events and activities. Just email me at [[email protected]] or call JoAnn Farmen at 695-9217 or Becky McDonald at 578-5693.
