Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS)

SRHS Academy of Finance

The Academy of Finance connects high school students with private business, resulting in unparalleled opportunities for education and work experience in the financial services industry. There are many different courses available in the Academy of Finance.

Internships are available to 11th and 12th grade students. Another motivation for a student to become part of the Academy is the opportunity to earn up to 23 units of college credit. For details, contact Jane Buck at 621-9020, ext. 3010.

SRHS Student Heads to D.C.

SRHS student Brian Boxler has been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) in Washington, D.C. in July. NYLC is a leadership development program for high school students who demonstrate leadership potential and scholastic merit.

The theme of the NYLC is "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting Leaders of Today." Throughout 10 days, Brian will interact with personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media, and the international community. The NYLC prepares students to serve our country well, whether as elected officials, active members within communities around the world, or intelligent and responsible members of the work force. Congratulations, Brian!

Air Force Junior ROTC

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) had a successful year thanks to the dedication of the cadets and the support of the administration, parents, and community. The unit was selected by the Air Force as a "Distinguished Unit" because it exceeded its goals and made a significant impact on "Building Better Citizens for America." There are approximately 700 schools in the U.S. that offer AFJROTC, but only about 10% earn this distinction.

One of the major goals this year was to try and change the image of ROTC cadets from being involved only in drilling and marching to a viable academic part of SRHS and the community. This was accomplished by getting cadets more involved in community activities.

Cadets helped pick up trash and debris around Miramar Lake. The Kitty Hawk Air Society, a club dedicated to promoting academics and community service, served food several times at St. Vincent De Paul and contributed more than a ton of food for the San Diego Food Bank.

The unit's Awareness Presentation Team visited elementary schools and put on conflict resolution workshops. In addition to all of the above, one of the unit's responsibilities is to present the national flag (colors) at school and civic events. This year, guided by the leadership of Cadets Eric Cohee and Kristine Mayer, the Color Guard made more than 30 presentations and was invited to perform at Petco Park in May.

The Color Guard Competition Team, commanded by Bonnie Atkisson, also had a successful year. The one team that really made its mark this year was the Unarmed Fancy Drill Team. Commanded by Cadet Kun Qian and after taking many first place awards locally and regionally, the drill team was invited to compete at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where they took several second place honors. The other teams--Armed Fancy and Saber Teams--were also successful this year.

Next year's senior staff is: Kun Qian, commander; Marc Fonatanares, vice-commander; Rhen Brinkerhoff, operations officer; and, Hesper Pham, mission support officer. They would like to invite anyone interested in AFJROTC to come by and visit. The unit is proud of the fact that almost a third of the cadets are above 3.0 and that more than 90% of its graduating seniors go on to college--not into the military as many people think.

There is no obligation to join ROTC. The only requirement is to wear the uniform once a week and to participate in a parade at the end of the year. Cadets can enroll for one year or one semester and drop whenever they want. Visit [http://srhs.sandi.net/] and go to the AFJROTC Department for more details, or call Major Standifer at 621-9020, ext. 4421.

Jerabek Elementary

Well, it might be summer for the other Scripps Ranch schools, but Jerabek is still plugging along.

Works of Art

Koalas just finished up the Annual Art Corps Art Show and Open House in June. Naturally, it was a big success again. It was inspiring to see the artwork of so many talented budding artists at the Pet Shop-themed event.

Once again, thanks to those Art Corps volunteers who spend so much time being trained, then prep, teach, and clean up the art lessons. Leader Monica Wixstead takes a break next year, and we are grateful that Diane Covel has stepped up to drive the team.

"Play" Time

The famous Jerabek 4th and 5th grade choir finished the year with a big production! I Need A Vacation is a rollicking story about a spent teacher and her equally stir crazy students who are all geared up for the lazy, hazy days of summer. The students rehearsed for months.

Thanks to choir moms Karen Sypolt-Jester and Betsy Haubrich for all their hard work and patience this year checking kids into rehearsals, running juice and popcorn sales, and just seeing to it that everything went smoothly.

FFO News

The Family Faculty Organization (FFO) recently voted to approve the purchase of four new computers for our library. Kudos to those of you who have donated and purchased used books at the Library Book Sale. As a result the librarians raised enough additional funds to buy one more computer. So now we will have five brand new computers in the library to help students with projects.

The FFO is glad to see that new blood has signed on to assist next year! For example, Karen Lopez will be our fearless FFO president and Dave Rayder will chair the Field Days. Kathy Schabacker will assist with the FFO secretary duties, and Sandra Coimbra will make sure the students smile pretty for picture day.

In addition, Debbie Klingenberg will help with the school directory, and Sarah Zimmer and Melodee Rupe will take over the Wednesday Family Packet Program. Dionna Crown will work the Publishing Center and update the marquee.

Of course, we must send a big "thank you" to all the returning FFO chairs, who seem to have boundless energy! Still, they would appreciate more helpers, particularly someone to coordinate the popular Family Math Nights at Jerabek. Contact the FFO if that person is you!

5th Grade Festivities

Finally, our 5th graders will celebrate their many years here at Jerabek with a fabulous Promotion Ceremony and party. Mark your calendars:

  • Tuesday, July 19--Rehearsal for promotion and autograph party;
  • Wednesday, July 20--Promotion Ceremony, 5:30-6:30pm; and,
  • Thursday, July 21--5th grade class party, during the school day.

Kudos to the 5th Grade Committee for organizing these events. With that the school year will be over. See you back in just six weeks. Have a great summer!

Miramar Ranch Elementary (MRE)

Open House Fun

Open House was held in May. Along with visiting classrooms, everyone was able to see the students' Art Corps projects on display. A spaghetti dinner started the event. Several thank you's are in order for making the night successful.

Thanks to the Mira Mesa-Scripps Kiwanis Club for serving the spaghetti dinner. Thanks also to Filippi's Pizza Grotto for donating the spaghetti. Finally, a thank you goes to all the Art Corps volunteers and especially to Heidi Brown for leading Art Corps this year. She will be sorely missed next year.

Kindergarten Events

Several kindergarten classes went to the San Diego Zoo where they spent an educational and fun day learning about exotic animals. During the last week of school, the kindergarten classes also had a luau party. J.W. Tumbles was there with exercise and activity stations for the kids, and Vons donated snacks.

Congratulations, 6th Graders!

The 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony in June was a huge success. A pool party was held after the ceremony. Thanks to Carrie Ross for organizing the event. Good luck to all the 6th graders as they move on to Marshall Middle School!

Celebrate the 4th

Lastly, Miramar Ranch will have an entry in the annual SRCA 4th of July Parade. The theme of this year's entry will be "65 Days Left of Summer." Keep your eyes open for that parade entry!

San Diego's 50 Best Moms

In March MRE 5th grader Patrick Ivison entered a Time Warner Cable contest for the 50 Best Moms in San Diego. His mom was chosen and received a surprise phone call from AJ of AJ's Playhouse on Channel 93.3. She said she was so surprised she couldn't figure out what was happening. Patrick and his mom, Jennifer Kayler, even got to go on Fox 6 News In The Morning. Here is Patrick's essay.

The world's greatest mom lives with my sister, Samantha, and me. What makes my mom so great? Well, I'm not exactly an easy kid to have. I was hit by a car several years ago and suffered a spinal cord injury, and since day one my mom has signed me up for every adaptive sport there was.

She takes me to and from soccer, rugby, and basketball practice. She takes me to and from physical therapy and occupational therapy. She helps me transfer to my wheelchair from my bed every single day, several times a day.

She helps me with my homework when I don't get it. She signed me and my sister up for Scouts. When we go to Boy Scout camp, she sleeps on the ground. We even got in the cold water every morning for a Water Dogs swim. She gets free tickets from my Uncle Tony for hockey games. We go skiing and fishing together. She has taught me how to do adaptive surfing, skiing, and kayaking. She lets me take a lot more risks than other people would.

She can tell very funny jokes and laughs a lot. She is a good friend to have around. She volunteers to teach art at my school and helps out my sports program. She puts on fundraisers to help me attend a new therapy program called Project Walk that insurance won't pay for.

She is going to school now to become a nurse. Sometimes she asks me to help her study for her anatomy course. She is currently studying her nutrition course using me as a lab rat. Today's nutritional food just happened to be low-fat chocolate whipped cream on blueberries. But she knows when to let me play PlayStation and watch TV too.

When I think about my mom, I think how lucky I am to have her. Oh, by the way my mom's name is Jennifer Kayler.

Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary (EBS)

Parade with the Penguins on July 4th!

All EBS Penguins and their families are invited to march in the SRCA 4th of July Parade. We will provide noisemakers for the kids, hats for the adults, and flags for everyone while marching in the parade. Children can bring their bikes and wagons. We'll provide decorations.

Wear your EBS T-shirts--we'll have some available for purchase--and let's show our Penguin pride. Meet at the start of the parade route on Red Cedar Drive and Ironwood Road at 9:15 am. Incoming students are encouraged to join us!

Returning Students

Is your child a returning student and desperate to find out who their teacher will be next year? Class assignments will be posted on Friday, Sept. 2, at 10 am and students may visit their new classrooms between 10 and 10:30 am that day.

Next school year, we will communicate via email and our website more often, so please be sure we have your email address on file in the office.

"Hats Off" to Bryon Solberg

And finally, we want to say a special thank you to Bryon Solberg, who ends his tenure as our safety patrol coordinator. From the day EBS first opened, Bryon has taken on the challenge of coordinating traffic and parking for our school. Bryon--and his collection of, shall we say...interesting...hats--personally greeted our little Penguins each morning at the crosswalk with a smile and a warm welcome, and said farewell each afternoon. Bryon is an inspiration to us all, keeping our children safe and secure through his donation of countless hours of his time. From all the Penguins, thank you, Dr. Bryon!

Penguins Invade Petco Park

EBS Penguins invaded Petco Park in June for an afternoon game between our Padres and the visiting Chicago Cubs. EBS held a fundraiser and sold 500 tickets to family and friends, and we raised more than $1,300 for the school.

EBS would like to thank the Little League Division A Yankees, who purchased more than 50 tickets and also hosted the tailgate party; DawnSignPress, who purchased more than 40 tickets; and, Miramar Ranch Elementary School, who purchased more than 50 tickets and joined us as we dominated three sections at Petco. It was fun to see EBS spirit so greatly represented.

Raffle winners Allen Hizon and Stephen Moser received an extra treat, representing EBS as our Heavy Hitters. They were escorted down onto the playing field, watched Major League Baseball up close, then had their photo displayed on the FriarVision.

Also raffled off at the tailgate party to the kids in attendance where Padres collectables. Those included a Tony Gwynn replica helmet, a Padres baseball glove, bobblehead figurines, pennants, and travel mugs, to name a few.

The clouds helped keep the sun away, making watching the game extremely comfortable. Unfortunately, the Cubs made us feel uncomfortable when they plated single runs in four separate innings to defeat our Padres by the score of 4-0. But even the defeat did not dim the excitement and fun that all the Penguins enjoyed throughout the game, as friends got to see each other outside the school atmosphere.

Now that we've done this once, let's hope next year we draw an even bigger crowd, raise more money, and maybe raffle off many more surprises too. So start planning now to join the Penguins as we once again invade Petco Park! See you at the game!

Other Schools

Chabad Hebrew Academy

Top Teacher

Chabad teacher and science department chair Pat Paluso won semifinalist status as top science teacher at the 54th California Science Fair Awards held in May in Los Angeles. Pat was nominated by one of her own students. She was recognized by the fair committee for her success in sponsoring three students to the statewide finals held at the University of Southern California. Pat is known for going the extra mile for her students in so many ways. Congratulations, Pat, on this honor!

Exploring California History

Chabad students took a hands-on approach to state history in early May at a special field trip in northern California. Their education encompassed California's history--by exploring gold panning and churning butter at Sutter's Fort --and history in the making when they toured the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Jewish History on Display

Did you know that one of America's noted Jewish gangsters--Bugsy Siegel--donated guns and money to support the fledgling state of Israel? No? Then how about the 2,500 Cuban Jews who fled Fidel Castro's rule to land in Miami? Still surprised? Then here is another information nugget. Many modern rock ballets found their prototype from another notable American Jew, Anna Sokolow, who created the seminal Opus 65 that hit the New York stage in 1965.

These facts were just some of the information featured at Chabad's history display on the 350 years of Jews in America, as part of their Family Night. The display, held in May, included hands-on fun, such as panning for gold and trying out a fantasy Ellis Island trip complete with a copy of the Statue of Liberty, immortalized by the poetry of another American Jew, Emma Lazarus.

Information booths presented Jewish history, from the early colonial days to modern times. It included the tragic death of Judy Resnick, America's first Jewish woman in space in the 1986 explosion of the shuttle Challenger.

Students also featured San Diego Jewish history. They showed the dramatic growth in Jews starting Beth Israel in 1861 as the first synagogue in Southern California to today's 13 shuls that includes one in Tijuana. Everyone said they found something new in the exhibit.

Fun for Parents and Toddlers

A series of fun activities will be offered for all parents and children, from babies up to 4 years old. The ongoing program will be held Wednesdays from 10 to 11 am at Chabad Hebrew Academy's campus. The events are:

  • July 6--Petting zoo and pony rides;
  • July 13--Clown show, face painting, and balloons;
  • July 20--San Diego Zoo group outing;
  • July 27--a spectacular Bubble Show; and,
  • Aug. 3--Kruising Kritters Reptile Show.

All events are free except for the San Diego Zoo outing, which requires zoo admission. For details, call 566-1996.
