Organizations March 2010 Scripps Ranch Theatre (SRT) presents the off-Broadway hit Over the River and through the Woods, a touching yet hilarious comedy. The play opens Friday, Mar. 26, and runs through Saturday, Apr. 24. The plot: A wonderful family comedy, Over the River is about Nick, a 32-year-old single Italian-American man who dutifully has dinner with his grandparents every Sunday. At an unscheduled visit on Thursday, Nick announces that he is leaving New Jersey to take a job in Seattle. To his grandparents, who have already lost Nick's parents to distant cities, Nick's desire to move for professional advancement makes no sense. The grandparents take his announcement as a declaration of war and pull out all the stops, including matchmaking, to keep him home. One scheme includes introducing him to the lovely Caitlin O'Hare. For performance dates, times, and reservations, please call the SRT box office at 578-7728 or visit our website at [www.scrippsranchtheatre.org]. All performances are held in the theatre on the campus of Alliant International University. Now in its 31st year, SRT consistently produces high quality and entertaining theater. Scripps Ranch Theatre announces its plays and schedule for the 2010-2011 season, starting in September. Social Security by Andrew Bergman: Our season starts with a hilarious adult comedy about the shattering of yuppie bliss, the timelessness of romance, and a Jewish mother who turns her children's lives upside down in the nicest way. Deathtrap by Ira Levin: A classic thriller written by the author of Rosemary's Baby, Deathtrap is a blend of mystery, thrills, and humor. This gripping tale will amuse you, confuse you, and hold you in its spell. Painting Churches by Tina Howe: At its core this is a beautifully written play about love--love that has survived the crucible of a long marriage, love that continues to sustain even in the dimming of the day. It is said that Tina Howe uses words like brushstrokes. Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley: Spend an evening with the sisters--Lenny, Meg, and Babe--as they wind their way out of trouble and into your heart. This Pulitzer Prize winner is a poignant, comical, touching story of life and love in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Rounding Third by Richard Dresser: Come be a little leaguer as Coach Don and Coach Michael--a bit of an odd couple--lead you to victory or to, um, enjoyment of the game? It's a very comical and heartwarming look at baseball, fatherhood, and life values. For ticket information and reservations, please call 578-7728 or visit [www.scrippsranchtheatre.org]. As city funding has decreased, our library depends even more on support from the SRFOL for purchase of books and media, as well as programming. Grace's Book Nook, staffed by volunteers, is our biggest source of revenue. This month the Book Nook features specials on a selection of 50-cent fiction, videos, audio books, and children's books. Your donations of books are always appreciated, and right now we have a particular demand for paperback fiction. Please consider recycling any books you no longer want through Grace's Book Nook into new books for our library! Due to space limitations at the library, we regret we can only accept donations from the 1st to the 15th of each month until further notice. The next monthly free children's program sponsored by the SRFOL is on Thursday, Mar. 18, at 3 pm. It will feature a puppet show by Kathy Felker Puppet Productions. Get set for fun! On Sunday, Mar. 21, at 2:30 pm the "Pleasure of Your Company" presents the Peter Rutman Band in a program of jazz classics, blues, old standards, and Latin favorites. There is no charge for the concert, although donations are appreciated. Meet the musicians at a complimentary post-concert reception. The Book Discussion Group meets on Wednesday, Mar. 24, at 6:30 pm in the seminar room. Due to difficulties procuring sufficient copies of previously planned books, the schedule has changed. The title for March was unavailable at press time. Likely candidates are The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care by T.R. Reid--if available--or The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly. Please check our website at [www.srfol.org] for updates. Copies of this month's book will be available at the library circulation desk. Rose Parade Award: The Kiwanis float won the Isabella Coleman Award for the "best presentation of color and color harmony through floral use." Haiti Relief: Kiwanis has an international foundation. A special link was created for donations. You can be sure that your donations go to relief efforts. The website is: [http://kif.kiwanis.org/KIF/newsarea/news/10-01-15/Join_Kiwanis_Haiti_relief_effort.aspx]. Because we enjoy unloading your trash and tossing it in bins, we will again sponsor the spring Clean-Up Day. It is on Saturday, Apr. 24. Page 11 has details. Interested in "Serving the Children of the World"? Kiwanis is a wonderful vehicle for community service and our club is friendly and convenient. We encourage you to visit us for a free breakfast on a Wednesday from 7:15 to 8:15 am at Mimi's Café in Mira Mesa--with the exception that on the second Wednesday of each month we meet at 6:30 pm. We often have great speakers. For information, visit our website at [www.scripps-miramesakiwanis.org] or call me at 536-9821. Many good reasons existed for starting Computer Users Groups early on. The equipment in those early days didn't always work or work properly, and software was often unusable or nonexistent. Early buyers were overwhelmed, yet few of them had all the skills necessary to fully understand a personal computer. To remedy this, Computer Users Groups were formed to share knowledge. Hardware has improved greatly and software is much friendlier. Yet we still experience the frustrations early users experienced. Scripps Ranch is fortunate to have a Computer Users Group that provides a resource for users of all levels. We meet in the Scripps Ranch Library's seminar room from 9:30 am to noon on the third Saturday of each month. The next meeting is on Saturday, Mar. 20. For details, please call Dave Bechtel during the evenings at 549-2077. Who are the masked revellers below? The Mystery Committee members will only reveal their identities when Mardi Gras Madness Extravaganza explodes this month. Please join your neighbors and local Auxiliary members for a royal evening of fun and frolic, all benefitting Rady Children's Hospital and the new Acute Care Pavilion Equipment Fund. Tickets for the event on Saturday, Mar. 13, at the Mission Valley Marriott are $75 per person. Contact Michele Fisher at [sfisher@san.rr.com] for reserved seats or to donate auction items and monetary gifts. This is sure to top the crazy event from last year....so lassiez les bon temps rouler--let the good times roll--all for the kids, of course! The Hidden Valley House Auxiliary thanks the Scripps Ranch community for its continued support. Throughout the past 10 years, our Auxiliary has helped generate about $250,000 in monetary and in-kind donations for the shelter. Needs are: pillows, new towels, twin-size sheets, twin-size plastic mattress covers (zipped), umbrellas, journals, hair conditioner, and AA batteries for kids' toys. They also can use slacks and jeans in sizes 8-10 for boys and girls. Please drop off donations at the Scripps Ranch Library or at the home of Ellen Hawkins at 11528 Wills Creek Road. Waterwise Garden Tour: Day two is on Sunday, Mar. 21, from 1 to 3 pm. Twenty-five neighbors will show you what's possible, from no-cost, do-it-yourself to elegant professional work. This includes eight backyards and several onsite landscapers and contractors. To see the drive-yourself list and map, go to [wwwscrippsranch.org/ssr] and click the "Waterwise Garden Tour" link. Rainwater Harvesting: Scripps Ranch is starting to reuse more of our soft, chemical-free rain water. Every inch of rain on a 1,000-square-foot roof yields nearly 600 gallons of fresh water. Here's what's needed to make use of it: Tip of the Month, contributed by Ben Radhakrishnan: For a complete list of residential rebates from SDG&E, go to [www.sdge.com/residential/rebates.shtml]. For business rebates, see [www.sdge.com/business/esc/large/largemain.shtml]. What a wonderful 29th anniversary celebration we had at our February meeting. The room was filled with long-time members, and we were happy to see so many new members attend. The evening started with an informative presentation on succulents by Kay Harry. Kay told us how to plant, care, and display succulents. We had time to enjoy our anniversary cake and socialize. If you don't want to miss out on these wonderful events, our general meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month at the Swim and Racquet Club on Aviary Drive at 7 pm. We have monthly activities that take us to different areas of San Diego. In February our Gadabouts took us to the Mingei Museum for a docent tour and then the Prado for lunch. We have a monthly coffee every third Tuesday of the month, and it is a wonderful time to get to know our members better and form new friendships. For information on all of our activities groups, please visit [www.scrippsranchwelcomeclub.com]. Our applications are in the library, various realty offices, and the Scripps Ranch Recreation Center. We have resumed after enjoying a holiday vacation from pen and keyboard. Each free workshop is designed to support writers of all genres and skill levels. Congratulations to author Keith Jones (pictured above) on his successful fiction offering, Mayan Equinox. Keith got the mystery novel idea during his plane ride home after a trip to Mexico. When the book was complete, he entered it into a writing contest that led to a publisher who liked the Mayan suspense thriller. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Barnes & Noble in Mira Mesa. Join us! For more information, please call Hitch at 679-7111. In these uncertain times, probably everyone in Scripps Ranch has friends who have lost jobs and are facing challenges searching for new employment. In our networking group, Scripps Tips, each member is self-employed, thus personally accountable for building his or her own "job." While none of us have a traditional paycheck, we also are not at risk of being "laid off." Each of us is self-reliant and resilient and not dependent on corporate whim. The buck stops with us. Many of our members have attended our weekly breakfast meetings for more than a decade, others not as long. We learn from each others' experiences, we support each other with referrals when possible, and we observe reinvention as members adapt to new challenges. We meet every Friday at a local restaurant and take turns presenting to the group. We invite new members in fields not represented in the group. For more information, please visit our website at [www.scrippstips.net], then contact our president, Tony Ling, at 705-3342. |
