Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS)

Principal's Message

March madness is here! Our 10th grade students are finishing up their preparation for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), a graduation requirement. Our pass rate last year was 95% on the first try, and we anticipate even better results this year.

Our students continue to excel both academically and through their involvement in extracurricular activities. Students Samuel Carson, Kelsey Sakumoto, Howard Sun, and Leo Zhou have been selected as finalists in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships. These superior students were selected from 16,000 semifinalists.

Senior Brennan Clay, who is headed to the University of Oklahoma, played in the Offense/Defense All American Bowl football game in early January. Additionally, Brennan will be honored in March for his selection as a 2009-2010 Scholar-Leader-Athlete by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

The Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) selected SRHS Cadet Lieutenant Kevin Huynh as one of eight cadets to fly to Washington, D.C., in April for one week. Also, SRHS Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFJROTC) cadets recently attended a JROTC drill meet at Long Beach Poly Tech High School. Our cadets competed against approximately 32 other JROTC high schools from California and Nevada. The Saber Team was awarded the first place sweepstakes plaque, and the Unarmed Team was awarded the third place plaque. All in all, the cadets took home 19 awards.

Our first annual Scripps Ranch Coffee House, which featured solo and ensemble performances from performing arts students, was a huge success. From the start of this school year, Mrs. Dake-Eng, our choir teacher, has done an exemplary job developing our choir program.

Because of an increased number of tardies, we have made changes for the spring semester. Students who have an excessive amount of tardies will be given a consequence that can result in not being able to participate in extracurricular events. Our biggest challenge appears to be first period. This is a friendly reminder that carpools and students need to leave earlier to get to school on time. Parents are reminded to monitor student tardies via ParentConnection.

Our technology continues to be upgraded. We have improved our school infrastructure, and in our library/media center we added a stronger WiFi access point, Promethean board, and Netbook computers. Library teacher Shannon Toyzan has done a top-notch job upgrading our library. With the addition of Promethean boards in all English classes for the 2010-2011 school year, about 40% of classes will have interactive technology tools. We must keep technology as one of our top priorities.

The SRHS Foundation "Taste of the Ranch" was a huge success. Parents, staff, and community members enjoyed an amazing assortment from our favorite restaurants. This event was made possible by incredible volunteers who work hard for our students and staff. Without their support, we would not be able to maintain our status as a high-performing comprehensive high school.

We want all of our students to be safe during spring break, especially while driving. Spring break is Monday, Mar. 29, through Friday, Apr. 2. To keep updated on events and activities, visit [www.srhsfalcons.org]. Go Falcons!

Family Math Night

Mr. Calvin Baylon, Mr. Tim Wright, and Ms. Eleanor Cena-Nguyen welcome any new collectibles or items that can be raffled off as prizes for our first Family Math Night hosted by the math department on Thursday, Apr. 8. This event takes place from 6 to 7:30 pm in the multipurpose room. We are looking for donations of calculators, pens, or rulers in new or excellent condition. Please send any collectibles or donations to Mr. Wright. Thank you!

Drama and Choir Team Up for Into the Woods Jr.

The drama department is teaming up with the choir to bring you Into the Woods Jr. The original version's music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim, composer and/or lyrics for such shows as West Side Story and the infamous Sweeney Todd. However, Into the Woods takes a lighter approach, taking the audience through a mixture of fairy tales including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and The Baker and his Wife.

You will laugh and cry. With any luck, our characters, well, most of them anyway, will live happily ever after. The show is at 6:30 pm on: Thursday, Apr. 15; Friday, Apr. 16; Saturday, Apr. 17; and, Monday, Apr. 19. Come support Marshall's theatre arts department.

Character Matters Essay Contest

We are proud to announce that Elise Church won second place in the middle school division of the Character Matters Essay Contest sponsored by the Character Development Center at the University of San Diego. This contest provides a platform for insightful discussions and reflections on experiences that call for honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, self-discipline, and many other virtues.

All students have encountered experiences where their character has been tested, inspired, and strengthened. This essay contest provides students a chance for conscious reflection on these experiences. It originated from the Templeton Foundation "Laws of Life" essay contest, [http://lawsoflife.org], which emphasizes "the core values, ideals, and principles by which we live." Thank you to Elise's English teacher, Andrea Wright, who informed us of this wonderful accomplishment.

Progress Reports

The end of the first six-week grading period of the second semester is on Friday, Mar. 19. Progress reports will be issued to students on Friday, Mar. 26. Ask to see your child's progress report.

Why a Science Fair?

Since 1955 the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF) has encouraged thousands of San Diego and Imperial County students to look to science for inspiration, academic challenges, and possible careers. We provide a regional science competition that stimulates an interest in science, thus helping better prepare our future work force--the students of today.

Why is a good science education important for every child, not just those headed toward a scientific or technical career? Because science is everywhere, and understanding how it is a part of our lives can help give students a great foundation for success in life.

Your tax-deductible donation to the GSDSEF will help guarantee the future of this competition. The GSDSEF is an all-volunteer organization; donations go to support students. Please visit our website at [www.gsdsef.org] for more information. Make contributions payable to: "Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair," and send to GSDSEF, P.O. Box 22658, San Diego, CA 92192-2658. We appreciate your donations and help with this special program.

Elementary Schools

Dingeman Elementary

Ms. Millar Wins Award

One of our fabulous Dingeman 5th grade teachers, Christine Millar (now Zuniga), has won an Outstanding Teacher Dedication award in the second annual "I'm Thankful for My Teacher." This is a countywide campaign sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union, Cox Cable, and Junior Achievement! We want to acknowledge her hard work and dedication to Dingeman students.

According to Mission Federal Credit Union and Junior Achievement representatives, 7,345 student and parent thank you notes were submitted on behalf of more than 800 teachers from 152 area schools. This total represents an incredible 84% increase from last year's award-winning first-year campaign. It is a testament to the value and impact our teachers have in the lives of their students! An upcoming article in The San Diego Union-Tribune will feature all of the teachers from around San Diego County, including Christine Millar, who won awards in the various categories in the "Thank a Teacher" campaign.

Ms. Cox: Dingeman Teacher of the Year

Nancy Cox (right) was selected as Dingeman's teacher of the year! Nancy has been a speech/language pathologist for almost 30 years. She worked in the Cajon Valley School District for 20 years, and this is her tenth year at Dingeman. She has a master's degree from San Diego State University. She helps students improve speech, language, and social skills. She lives with her husband in Scripps Ranch and has two children in college. Nancy likes to walk her dog, read, travel, and snow ski.

5th Graders Help Haiti

The teachers and 5th graders in Mrs. Schwartz', Mrs. Shear's, and Mrs. Zuniga's classes opened up their piggy banks and hearts by donating $600 to the people of Haiti. As part of their curriculum, students learn about philanthropy, and when they found out about the situation in Haiti, they were eager to help.

"It makes me feel good that I'm helping people who really need it, and I know it's going to a good cause," said Ashley Garcia, a 5th grader in Mrs. Schwartz' class. The money collected will go to CARE USA. CARE has reached more than 50,000 people with food, clean water and water purification packets, hygiene kits, mattresses and blankets, and installation of water storage systems.

New Student Registration

Kindergarten and new student registration is scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 8, from 8 am to noon in the Dingeman multipurpose room. This includes any new students who will enter the school in the fall from kindergarten through 5th grade.

A Night of Magic and Fun... Just for Mothers and Sons!

Abra cadabra! On the night of Friday, Mar. 12, the Dingeman multipurpose room will transform into center stage in a spell-binding show of mystery, magic, and amazement....starring renowned illusionist, Amazing Dana the Magician!

Please join us from 6 to 8:30 pm for a special night for sons and mothers--or grandmothers, aunts, and so forth. Enjoy a delicious catered dinner, the magical intrigue of Amazing Dana, and a chance to win many great raffle prizes!

All boys will receive a cool magic souvenir to take home. Who knows...a budding Houdini may be among us! Look for reservation forms in the Tuesday packet and on the Dingeman school website at [www.Dingeman.net].

Box Top Contest Underway

The classroom Box Top Contest runs from Monday, Mar. 1, through Wednesday, Mar. 31. Make sure your bag of box tops is labeled with your name, teacher's name, and room number. You can print out and use a collection sheet from [btfe.com] if you'd like.

Please turn these into your classroom box top container or the big blue box top box outside the library. The top class in each grade level wins an ice cream party! Ask your neighbors, friends, and relatives to save their box tops as well.

Calling All LeapPads

Consider donating a LeapPad learning system that isn't being used anymore. Our resource department would love to have it. There are many students who could benefit from the LeapPad. Please contact Todd Barrow, school psychologist, for details at [tbarrow@sandi.net].

Yeah, Dingeman!

Dingeman was recently named one of the "2009 California Business for Education Excellence Honor Roll Schools." We received the "Scholar School" honor for showing steady academic growth over four years. We are one of 26 elementary schools in our district to receive this honor. Congratulations to Dingeman students, staff, and parents for this outstanding achievement!

Get Ready for the Spring Carnival!

This year's Spring Carnival is on Sunday, Apr. 25. To make this event a success, we need your support. We need volunteers, sponsors, and raffle item donations. We also are looking for vendors who would like to sell items.

All help is greatly appreciated. Please contact Carnival co-chairs: Lisa Devine at [ltdevine@sbcglobal.net] or Jamie Killam at [peterkillam@yahoo.com].

5th Graders Excel at Junior Achievement Biztown

The 5th grade students, teachers, and parents who attended the Junior Achievement Biztown field trip were extremely impressed with how it was run. The students learned about earning a paycheck, depositing money into a bank account, opening up a savings account, and keeping a check register. Then they spent their money at different shops.

They held "life like" jobs such as CEO, CFO, photographer, newspaper editor, construction worker, SDG&E repair person, bank teller, doctor, and others. There was even a police officer giving out tickets, and students had to go to court. Businesses created ads. The interaction between all the businesses was well thought out, and students took their jobs seriously while having fun.

Thank you to the Family Faculty Connection (FFC) for funding this fabulous 5th grade field trip. We hope to see this continue in the years to come.

Looking Forward

  • Tuesday, Mar. 2--Grade 4 writing test begins;
  • Thursday, Mar. 4--Family Science Night;
  • Friday, Mar. 12--Mother-Son Night;
  • Monday through Friday, Mar. 15-19--4th grade to Old Town;
  • Friday, Mar. 19--Famous Artist Workshop;

It is only possible to live happily ever after on a day-to-day basis.

Enjoy the spring season!

Jerabek Elementary

From Our Principal

Scripps Ranch Community and Jerabek Families,

March?! Is it possible that we're heading for the final turn with the finish line in sight? Well, almost. We still have the California Standards Test (CST) for all grade 2-5 students, one more round of benchmark exams, and parent-teacher conferences in the coming months before we close the book on this school year. There is still much work to do, and I am confident that teachers and students will not slow their pace until they cross the finish line in July!

That said, we are looking ahead to the 2010-2011 school year and begin early registration on Thursday, Mar. 11. Enrollment packets will be available in the front office for new students within Jerabek's boundaries. To pick up an enrollment packet, you will have to bring in a valid proof of residency--utility bill, lease agreement, and so forth.

Registration hours will be daily from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm only. Documents required to enroll your students are:

  1. Original birth certificate;
  2. Original shot record--complete immunizations are required at time of enrollment; and,
  3. Proof of residency.

Choice applicants will be enrolled once they receive an acceptance letter from the Enrollment/Choice office. Once your student is accepted on Choice, you will not need to reapply.

Jerabek strives to create avid, lifelong learners who will be prepared for the challenges of the 21st century and be contributing members of our community, state, country, and world. Thank you for your continued support.

From Our FFO President

Hello Jerabek Families,

Thank you to everyone who brought in shoes for the Soles4Souls for Haiti. I think I delivered at least 200-300 pairs of shoes. This is one more reason why Jerabek shines!

Our spring Book Fair is Monday, Mar. 1, through Thursday, Mar. 4. On Thursday, Mar. 4, we will have our annual celebration for Dr. Seuss' birthday. I hope you all can attend this fun event. As usual, we'll be looking for volunteers to help out at the Book Fair.

Also, we have a Family Math Night and Family Science Night this month. Thank you to Ann Marie Gallagher and Vicki Colon who make these events so successful year after year!

This year we'll have Green Day on the Wednesday, Mar. 17--St. Paddy's Day--sponsored by the Green Team, and our all-time favorite Spirit Week starts on Monday, Mar. 8.

Last but not least, mark your calendars for minimum days on Wednesday, Mar. 24, Thursday, Mar. 25, and, Friday, Mar. 26, for parent-teacher conferences. The following articles have more details about the events I mentioned.

I am having a blast as your Family Faculty Organization (FFO) president. I love working with so many creative and thoughtful people. Thank you!

What's Happening at Jerabek

5th Grade Photo

The 5th grade promotion picture will be taken on Tuesday, Mar. 9, at 9:30 am. The students will get their T-shirts that day and will wear them for the photo.

Attention 5th Grade Parents

Miramar Ranch Elementary (MRE)

Principal's Message

Dear Families and Friends of Miramar Ranch Elementary,

February was busy at Miramar Ranch! We worked hard to keep our focus on teaching and learning in the midst of lots of exciting events outside the classroom. The month began with our Father-Daughter Dance held at Marshall Middle School. The "Hoedown Throwdown" was a sell-out again this year, and dads and their daughters had a great time.

The second week of February our Student Council members were busy selling and distributing chocolate roses in celebration of Valentine's Day. This popular fundraiser is always a big success for our Student Council, which the following week sponsored Twin Day just for fun.

Students in grades 3-5 were put to the test when they were administered the benchmark assessment for science in late February. These assessments help prepare 5th grade students for standardized testing in the spring and help teachers reflect upon the effectiveness of their instruction. Students have just finished their study of physical science: matter and energy in grade 3, magnetism and electricity in grade 4, and mixtures and solutions in grade 5.

March brings the Fitnessgram assessment for 5th graders, the 5th grade school photo, parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, Mar. 25, and Friday, Mar. 26, and spring break from Monday, Mar. 29, through Friday, Apr. 2.

A special thanks to our parent volunteers who have helped direct traffic before and after school these past few weeks. Your help has been so important in keeping our kids safe--thanks! For the latest news and updates, please check the website at [www.miramarranch.org].

6 Months Down, 3 To Go!

The school year is slowly winding down, and the children are finding their assignments easier to complete. The trees are starting to bud, and MRE students are dreaming of summer vacation.

STAR Writing Test

The STAR writing assessment takes place on Tuesday, Mar. 2, for 4th grade students. Parents, make sure your child receives plenty of rest the night before and eats a brain-generating breakfast to give them an excellent start to the day.

Pictures

Make sure your 5th grade MRE student looks his or her best on Monday, Mar. 8. Remind them to give their brightest smile, as they are moving up to the next level very soon.

Meetings

Please attend the monthly School Site Council (SSC)/School Based Management Team (SBMT) meeting on Tuesday, Mar. 9, at 3:30 pm. On Friday, Mar. 12, the monthly Family Faculty Association (FFA) meeting is at 8 am.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, Mar. 25, and Friday, Mar. 26. Remember to return your "save the date" slips to your child's teacher.

Young Audiences

On Wednesday, Mar. 24, Miramar Ranch will host Young Audiences, a local nonprofit group that supports the arts, for a night of storytelling with Marilyn McPhie. Students and their parents can come hear a wonderful story presentation followed by a hands-on activity. Look to the website for details.

Spring Break

Spring break is coming! All MRE students will be off the week of Mar. 29.

Pictures Needed

The Yearbook Committee needs pictures from your class field trips, parties, and Art Corps. We also need pictures from all school events--such as Halloween Carnival, ice cream social, assemblies, Science Nights, and dress up days. Please put your pictures on a CD marked with your teacher's name and room number and drop them off in the office. All CDs need to be in by Monday, Mar. 15.

Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary (EBS)

Special Honor for EBS

EBS was included as a Scholar School on the California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) 2009 Honor Roll. The Honor Roll includes 1,304 California public elementary, middle, and high schools that have been recognized by California's business community. The schools have demonstrated consistent high student academic achievement and made significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among students. Congratulations to all of our Penguins and our hardworking staff!

EBS Penguins Show Great Character

When emergency strikes, EBS Penguins get right to work! After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, 5th grade students and teachers decided to help. They teamed up with Sport Chalet and "Soles4Souls" to collect shoes for quake victims. Soles4Souls is a charity with a simple mission: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes.

The students put up posters at school informing others of the project and asked Principal Greg Collamer to tell EBS families through a phone announcement. The result: thousands of shoes collected in three days! Fifth grader Ryan Dempsey made a couple of trips to school with big bags full of shoes. (Some 5th graders pictured below with a cart full of shoes).

Thank you to all the students and families for their generosity. Also, thanks to our 5th grade teachers-- JJ Shobar, Lisa Bailey, and Lynn Moos--and to Ms. Dee and Ms. Robin for delivering them to Sport Chalet.

EBS Helps Fight Hunger

Sadly, a child in the Third World dies every six seconds because of a lack of essential nutrition, and EBS students are doing something about it. They have donated $1,500 to buy food for the next Friends and Family Community Connection (FFCC) food packaging event on Saturday, Mar. 20, and Sunday, Mar. 21.

EBS has partnered with FFCC since 2005 in the fight against hunger, mostly focusing on helping starving children in Tanzania but also providing food to hungry families in San Diego. Over the years EBS students have collected coins to buy food for starving children. In January a group of students and parents participated in the San Diego Fight Against Hunger 5K Fun Run/Walk.

This year each class has been assigned a child from Tanzania. Some students have written letters to their child, and the FFCC team delivered them in January on a trip there. The excitement that these letters created in our friends in Tanzania is difficult to put into words--some children have never received a letter. And our students are eager to read the letters the Tanzanian children have written.

EBS invites all Scripps Ranch schools to join us in the next food packaging event. We believe children working together can make a difference. The event is on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 20 and 21, at the Church of Rancho Bernardo. Visit [www.ffccsd.org] to register.

Students Recognized in Art...

Seven EBS students were finalists in the San Diego Youth Art Month exhibition in February. The students whose work was included in this juried show at the San Diego Art Institute were: Lahnee Cornell, Corey Freeh, Natalie Guggino, Olivia Jackson, Jasmine Jahadi, Kai-Dylan MacFarland, and Anna Sundberg.

Kai-Dylan MacFarland's artwork received a first place award and will go on to be shown in the Southern California competition. Lahnee Cornell's piece won the Spizazzi Award, and Corey Freeh received an honorable mention. Congratulations to all our Fine Artists!

...And Music

Six EBS students were selected to participate in the San Diego City Schools Honor Choir. The honored EBS singers are: Brooke Christano, Anna Sundberg, Jodi Sanders, Elizabeth Shute, Natalie Guggino, and Angelo Carrasco. They will perform in the select choir on Saturday, Mar. 6, at Point Loma Nazarene University. Dr. Linda Lungren is the EBS music teacher. Best of luck to all!

Recycling Printer Cartridges

EBS is collecting used printer ink cartridges for recycling. If you have any used cartridges, please bring them into the main office. Proceeds from the recycling campaign are being used for additional school supplies.

Give Us Shelters, Please

As warmer weather approaches, EBS is looking for donations of EZ-Up shades. Both the kindergarten and upper playgrounds bake in the sun during the heat of the day with little relief. If any community members are able to donate shades, our Penguins would so grateful.

Got Super Pledge?

EBS Parents,

Have you made a donation to our Super Pledge yet? It's not too late! Did you know that if every family made just a $62 contribution we can achieve our goal this year? Any amount helps support our Penguins, their education, and experience at EBS! Donation envelopes are available in the front office. If your employer has a charitable matching program, you can double your donation.

Time to Enroll!

It's enrollment season for the 2010-2011 school year. Chabad Hebrew Academy (CHA) has held a 99% retention rate for returning students, leaving limited spaces for new students. We encourage parents of prospective students and preschoolers to visit for a tour. Please call Marci Germain at 566-1996, ext. 1204.

Mommy and Me: Infants and Toddlers

Enjoy Wednesday mornings on Mar. 3, 10, 17, and 24, at 11 am in the CHA music room. Our music teacher, Mrs. Shiri Covalin, brings this program to life with music and musical instruments. There is no charge. Contact Marci Germain at 566-1996, ext. 1204, for details.

Haitian Disaster Spurs CHA Students into Action

The CHA middle school students and student government raised money to send to the relief fund through food sales, collections, and small change jars in each classroom. A CHA special committee sent packages of medicine and relief items with a school representative who went to Haiti to help. Middle school girls, along with CHA alumni, are painting shoes with words such as "hope" and "love" in the Haitian language.

Grandparents Day Celebration

Grandparents traveled from across the globe to attend CHA's annual Grandparents Day celebration. Students of all ages put their all into preparing a very special Grandparents Day event. They created the invitations individually with love. Students practiced their songs, finished their costumes, learned their lines, and then waited for the day to arrive.

When it did, our campus came alive with a record number of grandparents--more than 150--making the journey from as far away as Israel, the East Coast, and many driving from Los Angeles and Orange counties. Mrs. Avril Marks, beloved surrogate grandmother to many, gushed, "This was simply the best celebration ever! I loved the musical, the omelet station, and the children!"

Grandparents spent time in classrooms, enjoyed brunch, were entertained by students in a beautiful performance, and witnessed a tribute to their commitment to their grandchildrens' education with the planting of a special Tu B'Shvat tree in their honor. Mrs. Betty Schwartz, grandparent of Netanel and Doron and a teaching professional herself, commented, "The Grandparents celebration was the best I have ever seen."

Blue Star Athletics

CHA has more than six teams playing in competitive leagues around the county. Our upper elementary basketball team posted its third win of the season with a score of 32-22. The Blue Stars have a shot to get to the championship game if they win their final two games. Please come support our teams!

Upcoming Community Events

  • Wednesday, Mar. 24--Preschool Model Seder; and,
  • Monday, Mar. 29--First night of Pesach.

Please call Marci Germain at 566-1996, ext. 1204, for details about these events.

St. Gregory the Great Catholic School

St. Gregory the Great is accepting applications for kindergarten through grade 5 for the 2010-2011 school year. A low student to teacher ratio, with no more than 20 students per class, affords a wonderful opportunity for individualized instruction, especially when neighboring schools face increasing student/teacher ratios in the classroom. Student applications are on the school website and in the school office.

The school program is aligned with California State Standards. It is exciting to see our new school grow with the addition of our 5th grade, the all-important portal to junior high, in September. Placement screening for prospective students entering grades 1-5 takes place on Saturday, Mar. 20, at 9:30 am. Contact the office to book an appointment.

A tour of the school may be scheduled through the school office at 397-1290, and enrollment is open year round. For information, visit [www.stggcs.org] or contact us at [office@stggcs.org].
