Troop 301 Roughs It at Lake Jennings

Imagine sleeping under the corners of a picnic bench at Lake Jennings, only being protected by a tarp, two trash bags, and 20 feet of cord! This is what Troop 301 scouts did for the Wilderness Survival merit badge. Scouts learned how to survive in the wilderness, different ways to signal people, and three ways to make a fire. We had our annual campfire show, with the Dragon Patrol's hilarious Dateline spoof! The best thing is we made it through the night and had our blue cards signed off!

In January our troop was at Webelos Day showing the Webelos how to tie knots. Webelos scouts also enjoyed our Hammer Throw and Mouse Trap games. It sure was a "snap"! We also had groups of Webelos who loved our troop and came to visit us! So if you are a Webelos trying to pick a troop, visit Troop 301!

We went on a 15-mile backpacking trip through Mission Trails (above). Eighteen scouts and scouters went on this prep hike because this summer we will go on the Yosemite 50-miler backpack trip! On Friday night on the Mission Trails hike, we set up camp in the dark! Fortunately, it was a full moon so we could see the trail. We also helped a man lost on the trail. That Wilderness Survival class paid off! We backpacked along the Shepherd's Pond, Fortuna Saddle, Wall, Oaklands, Grasslands, and the vintage San Diego Mission dam!

We also congratulate Tim DeRego as the third Eagle Scout in Troop 301!

Troop 616 Completes More of the Sea to Sea Trail

Troop 616 tackled the 11-mile desert segment of the Sea to Sea Trail from Borrego Springs to the Arroyo Salado primitive campground (above). We have now completed more than 90 miles of the 140-mile trail from the Pacific Ocean to the Salton Sea.

We worked on our GPS, map, and compass training. We saw a World War II vintage Army truck converted into a tourist contraption and had Twinkies delivered by an off-roader. The following scouts and adults participated: Theo Wisniewski, Kyle Lemmon, Eric Lehmann, Sean Ryner, James Berry, Cohl and Kelton Tabor, Matt Bernard, Andy Smetana, Alex Dewitt, Paul Honeycutt, Andy Wisniewski, Ron Tabor, David Berry, Ken Smetana, and Brian DeWitt.

We visited the Adventure Base 100 exhibit during its stop in San Diego in January. We had fun on the ropes course, at the IMAX dome, and seeing the museum. It will visit more than 40 cities across the country this year.

We found time to participate in the Webelos Day activities. We built our signal tower and provided knot training, rope making, and geocaching for the Webelos from the Scripps-Mesa District.

Troop 663 Stays Busy

After the break for the holidays, Troop 663 scouts are happy to be back to the schedule. We hosted more Webelos to a troop meeting highlighted by Dutch oven cooking and a slide show. So far, we have 15 new Webelos joining our troop. We have started to teach them the beginning skills of a boy scout.

We want to congratulate our newest Eagle Scout, Jacob Bieber. Jacob has been a great help from the time he joined our troop up to now. We hope he stays with us until he ages out.

Now for some disappointing news that occurred in January. We sadly could not go on one of our troop's favorite campouts at Joshua Tree because of all the rain we got. We still went to Palm Springs and rode the tram up to the snow. There was a lot of snow and it was cold.

The last event was helping at the food bank. Troop 663 usually goes to the food bank a couple of times each year to help out the needy. The scouts say, "We not only feel good about helping out poor people, but we get community service hours for all of our hard work." Besides not getting to camp at Joshua Tree, we had a pretty good January.

Troop 664 Enjoys the Great Outdoors

Troop 664 started the year off with many fun activities. First, we had a cold weather camping trip at Joshua Tree National Park, where scouts practiced survival skills in extreme conditions.

Next, we did our yearly trebuchet launch at the Webelos Day fair (upper right). We launched water balloons hundreds of feet at live scout targets! We also completed our Rock Climbing merit badges at the Solid Rock Gym, and got to spend the day climbing. Finally, we look forward to our ski and snowboard trip. We also have a bike trip planned soon.

Pack 614 Races into 2010

Pack 614 scouts started the year with the Pinewood Derby on their minds. The first pack meeting of 2010 revved up the young racers with the comedy movie Down and Derby.

Three weeks later, the pack held its annual Pinewood Derby races at the Jerabek Elementary School auditorium. Sixty-three scouts entered their cars in the event, with styles ranging from the traditional "wedge" to a flying Tiki to a Bat-Mobile look-alike (right).

The races were thrilling and the speeds were high, with a number of photo finishes. The crowd followed each race, and Cubmaster Blan Cox kept the energy flowing between racing heats.

At the end of the night, winners were determined and trophies were awarded in four categories. Congratulations to:

  • "Speed"--fastest of them all: Cody Ayers
  • "Originality"--creative idea for the car: Ryder Henson
  • "Appearance"--quality and detail, neat and clean: Sergio Chavez
  • "Workmanship"--skillful car making: Sean Hodgson

Trophies also were awarded to the runners-up in each category.

A special "thanks" to Art Nagano and Karl Zimmer who chaired this year's racing event. It was a great success!

Pack 1216 Races to the Finish Line

On your mark, get set, go...Pack 1216 held its annual Pinewood Derby in January at Marshall Middle School. Pack members and their families had an exciting time racing their one-of-a-kind vehicles (above). Special thanks to all those who helped make this event possible! Rankings were as follows:

  • Tigers: 1st, Dylan Boswell; 2nd, Riley Radici; tied for 3rd, Patrick Walker and Kyle Goodrich;
  • Wolf: 1st, Brandon Stadtherr; 2nd, Jack Silver; 3rd, Carson Leighty;
  • Bear: 1st, Max Steele; 2nd, Cameron Boswell; 3rd, Mason Bransetter;
  • Webelo I: 1st, Zack Askins; 2nd, Ryan Rafferty; 3rd, Michael Phaneuf;
  • Webelos II: 1st, Justin Todd; 2nd, Adam Popejoy; tied for 3rd, Grant Jung and Brent Goodrich; and,
  • Pack level: 1st, Justin Todd; tied for 2nd, Adam Popejoy and Zack Askins.

Our Webelos IIs spent December and January visiting the Scripps Ranch Boy Scout troops to help them decide which to join when they become boy scouts this summer. Their decision will be a little easier having attended Webelos Day. This event, put on by Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa troops, was held in the Community Park and gave the boys another opportunity to check out the troops.

Webelos I scouts took a fun class at the San Diego Natural History Museum in January and earned their Geologist pin. They also created Valentines for Veterans in late January that were sent to those at the Veterans Administration hospital in La Jolla. What a great way to show care and respect for those who have done so much for us.

PVC pipe was the material chosen by our Den 1 Wolves to create birdhouses. By showing their creativity they were able to fulfill a requirement to "build something useful." They also participated in a trash clean-up that not only helped keep our neighborhood clean but fulfilled a Wolf requirement.

Girls Enjoy a "Bowl" of Fun

Troop 8086 started the new year off with a bang, the bang of falling pins as they bowled their way to strikes and spares at Poway Bowl. The top score was earned by Amanda Levy. Great bowling!

The girls also earned their "Make It, Eat It" Try-It at Kitchen Arts in Mira Mesa. They made sugar cookies from scratch in a professional kitchen under the watchful eye of two chefs. There was flour everywhere as we rolled our dough and cut out shapes (below). We ate as many cookies as we took home. Yum!

Our latest endeavor was to earn the "Building Art" Try-It with Mad Science, constructing towers of marshmallows and toothpicks. Coming up, we'll make swaps for encampment. We can't wait for our first camping experience!
