Principal’s Message

One semester down and one more to go! Can you believe that we are already halfway through the 2018–2019 school year? Graduation will be here before you know it! Speaking of graduation, we had to change venues this year due to an increased cost in the facility. We are excited to establish a new partnership with the University of San Diego (USD) and will use its beautiful Jenny Craig Pavilion on Wednesday, June 12, at 10 am. We will be the only group using the arena that day, which will give families plenty of time to take pictures before and after the event. More details will be sent out to senior families this month.

SRHS would like to thank our Foundation and parent Ginger Colletto for organizing all of our College and Career lunchtime events. Last semester alone, we had 45 different college representatives visit our campus, as well as several career speakers who ranged from engineering to business with many more planned in the spring. These events have given our students invaluable opportunities to connect with college and career experts as they start to plan for their futures after high school. Thank you, Ginger and the SRHS Foundation, for making this happen for our Falcons!

Articulation for the 2019–2020 school year is in full swing! Counselors will meet with students from all grade levels during February and March to choose courses for next year. Parents will sign off on students’ choices. Marshall Middle School (MMS)

Principal’s Message

Dear Scripps Ranch Community, We began our second semester on Jan. 28. It will be a busy time of year as we begin speaking to our students about their classes for next year. Parents will receive information about course selections from our counselors in the next few weeks.

We will welcome our new 5th grade students and parents to Thurgood Marshall Middle School! We look forward to meeting our new group of students and are excited to share all the great opportunities we have for Scripps Ranch middle schoolers. On Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 pm we will have an informational night for all 5th grade parents. We also will have student and parent tours. 6th Graders Entering MMS

Parent Matriculation Night, an informational meeting for parents of all incoming 6th graders, will be on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 7:30 pm in the MMS Multipurpose Room.

MMS counselors will visit students at all of our elementary feeder schools in February. We will introduce students to MMS, talk about next year’s course selections, and answer any questions or concerns. Counselors will visit:

  • E.B. Scripps—Tuesday, Feb. 12, 9–10:30 am
  • Jerabek—Tuesday, Feb. 12, 10:30 am–noon
  • Miramar Ranch—Wednesday, Feb. 13, 8:30–10 am

8th Graders Moving to SRHS

Scripps Ranch High School counselors will be at MMS on Monday, Feb. 4, to speak to our 8th graders about their 9th grade course selections. They will meet individually with students during their English classes in the MMS theater.

Next Year’s Classes

MMS counselors will meet in the MMS theater with our 6th graders during their English classes on Friday, Feb. 8, and with our 7th graders during their English classes on Monday, Feb. 11. We will discuss course selections for next year.

Blankets Needed

Ms. Converse-Rath’s history classes hope to change the world! Seventh grader Sarah M. is starting a blanket drive for homeless people. If you have a new or clean used blanket to donate, please send it to MMS. Thanks in advance!

Music to our Ears

The MMS Instrumental Music Program will put on two concerts at the end of the month. The Band Festival Concert is on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and the Orchestra Festival Concert is the following evening, Wednesday, Feb. 27. Both concerts will be in the MMS Performing Arts Center starting at 7 pm. The performances will feature music that the band and orchestra students have prepared for adjudicated music festivals. Admission is free, and concessions will be on sale before and after each concert, with profits benefiting the Instrumental Music Program.

MMS Instrumental Music also will host an adjudicated band and orchestra festival on Saturday, Mar. 9, in conjunction with the Scripps Ranch High School Music Department and the Southern Border Section of the California Music Educators’ Association. Performances start in the morning and continue through the afternoon. Admission is free! Join us and support your MMS and SRHS musicians!

Dingeman Elementary

From Our Principal

At Dingeman Elementary School our teachers and students benefit from the district’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department Arts Enrichment Program. Each month all classes participate in a series of VAPA experiences that include drama, art, dance, and music. We love to see our students engaged in this learning.

During that time our teachers work collaboratively in grade-level professional learning communities. They focus on alignment within each grade level to deepen our understanding of each student’s strengths in relation to the standards. It’s exciting to see the positive impact on the teaching and learning in every classroom.

It’s that time of year when we start organizing for the upcoming year. Please see below for information regarding our registration dates for next school year.

New Student Registration K–5

  • Thursday, Mar. 21—8 am–1 pm, Dingeman Multipurpose Room

A completed registration packet and the following information is needed to register:

  • Birth certificate or passport
  • Current and up-to-date immunization record
  • Proof of residence

Registration packets will be available in the front office starting the week of Monday, Mar. 11. Please pick one up and fill it out prior to registration.

Enrollment Guidelines for TK, K, and 1st grade

  • Kindergarten—must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019
  • Transitional kindergarten (TK)—must be 5 years old between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2019
  • 1st grade—must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019

LEGO League Championship

Dingeman’s rookie 5th grade FIRST LEGO League Team, MasterMinds, competed at the Southern California FIRST LEGO League Championship against 54 teams—including middle schools—and won first place in Gracious Professionalism. The team is comprised of Sean Chen, Ahmet Kaynak, Roshen Pillay, and Lawrence Lam.

The award recognizes a team whose members show each other and other teams respect at all times. They recognize that both friendly competition and mutual gain are possible on and off the playing field.

Team MasterMinds qualified to compete in the championship by taking first place in Robot Design in their qualifying tournament. Madalyn Nguyen, the student mentor from Poway High School’s Robotics Team Spyder, provided strong support and invaluable experience to this rookie team. The parent coaches were Stephanie Lin and Daniel Chen. Congratulations!

Greetings From the FFC!

It is an exciting time at Dingeman! The Family Faculty Connection (FFC) has brought several new after-school enrichment programs to our school. They include Tae Kwon Do—taught by a former USA world athlete master—Bollywood Hip Hop, LEGO Engineering Education, and guitar, to name just a few.

These programs offer a unique learning experience for our students that they would not typically get in the classroom. We anticipate continuing to grow and provide more comprehensive after-school enrichment programs in the future.

Our Father Daughter Dance is on Friday, Feb. 8, starting at 6 pm. This year’s theme is truly enchanted—“Magical Unicorn Dance”! Dads are asked to wear a touch of pastel and daughters to wear pastel, gold, or white dresses. Dad substitutes are welcome. It will be a very special evening for everyone!

Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary

From Our Principal

Dear Family and Community Members,

On Dec. 13 EBS had the honor of performing with Barry Manilow at the Viejas Arena. Members of our 4th and 5th grade choir auditioned and were selected by our music teacher, Mr. Waczek, to participate in the “Very Barry Christmas” concert. In addition, six 2nd graders were selected to join the group. For several weeks the students practiced before school, learning a variety of songs to perform with Barry Manilow. They were thrilled to perform with an icon in such a huge arena. It was the experience of a lifetime.

After the performance we were invited onto the Fox 5 morning show to talk about the experience and perform some songs. The students were nervous and excited to sing on live TV.

Thank you to Meta Manguy, who put on an outstanding Mother Son Bowling bash and to all the families who joined. Our 2nd Annual International Night was a huge hit. We had 15+ nationalities and beautiful performances. Thank you to Raquel Frutos and Arwa Saif for all their amazing work.

This month we look forward to our Father Daughter Dance on Friday, Feb. 8. We expect this to be a very special evening for our Penguins!

Jerabek Elementary

From Our Principal

The Jerabek family hopes the year is going great so far, as we enter the second month of 2019. We have had some exciting events in the last couple of months. Many of our 2nd graders went on a field trip to the U.S.S. Midway Museum. After returning the students wrote about what they learned regarding their U.S.S. Midway visit and the connection to their content area focus. The following are a few quotes from the writing samples:

“I learned that people on the Midway sacrificed time with their families to save our country.” Danae

“We are learning about heroes in class. Good ways to describe heroes are dedication, bravery or courage, cooperation, and sacrifice.” Conrad

It was moving to hear our students make the connection between why they visited the Midway and the academic focus.

The Jerabek transitional kindergarten-kindergarten team transformed an empty classroom into the Polar Express complete with twinkling lights, snowflakes, and a faux fireplace (pictured below). The teachers acted as the “conductors” as they accepted boarding tickets from the children.

The Polar Express story was brought to life. The students, all dressed in their PJs, sat in a darkened room and listened to the story being read to them as they indulged on refreshments, just like the children in the original story.

After returning to their classrooms, the students discovered bells had been left on each of their chairs. One 5-year-old was overheard saying “Did we really just go on the train?” Kudos to the TK/K team and parent volunteers who helped make this a memorable and magical experience for students. Thanks.

The staff and I would like to give a huge shout out and thank you to Terra Norine, Robyn Ise, Annika Harrison, Corey Bernardo, Ariel Casali, and Ralph Pyeatt. Thank you for your time and support to put together furniture for the STEAM Lab/Makerspace room. It is greatly appreciated.

Exciting Events

In January we held Kindness Week, where classrooms participated in fun activities focusing on a culture of kindness, friendship, caring, and community service. The week wrapped up with a fun dance rally to celebrate the entire student body. Thank you to Laura Stephens and Alexis Richardson for coordinating these meaningful activities.

Our Family Faculty Organization (FFO) Pledge Drive has been very successful this year. To show appreciation to our most generous donors, Public House 131 hosted a donor happy hour in January. Thank you, Public House 131, a gastropub owned and operated by Scripps Ranch residents, for your support of Jerabek Elementary.

The FFO is always busy planning school and family events. The Jog-A-Thon is coming on Thursday, Feb. 7! This is a schoolwide event that raises funds for Jerabek, promotes physical fitness, and creates a fun way for students to participate in supporting their education.

Parents, you deserve a night out at the beautiful Prado (pictured below). Enjoy some fun with your grown-up Jerabek friends and support our school at our Spring Fling. While the kids are snug in their beds, you and your friends can enjoy games, dinner, dancing, and auctions.

The event of the year is on Saturday, Mar. 9. Only 250 tickets are available and this event usually sells out. Anyone who supports the school is welcome. If you haven’t reserved your Spring Fling tickets, get them at http://admit.cause4auction.com/JerabekSpringFling2019 until Friday, Feb. 22.

Miramar Ranch Elementary

From Our Principal

Dear Families and Friends of Miramar Ranch,

Students and staff continue to focus on individual and small group conferring as a way to learn more about our students’ needs. January was a busy month with teacher collaborative planning days, budget meetings, Scholastic Book Fair, and our Winter Wonderland White-Out Dance. Third, 4th, and 5th grade teachers administered the FAST assessments in reading and math for the second time this school year. The results allow us to track student progress over the course of the school year.

The end of January brought budget news and planning. Thanks to all who responded to requests for suggestions in prioritizing our expenditures. It was clear that keeping students and classrooms first was most important to families and staff.

February brings two Family Art Nights, the Great Kindness Challenge, Chocolate Roses for Valentine’s Day, and the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. Please check the MRE website for details.

2nd Grade Science and Engineering

Our lucky 2nd grade Hawks got to attend their annual field trip to the Birch Aquarium. The students spent the morning walking amongst the marine animals and learning about local research. They then got to get up close with some creatures and learn about animal adaptations. They also studied the processes that shape our coast and make our beaches.

On another day they got to compete in a catapult engineering challenge, where students designed and built their very own catapult using everyday items. Cotton balls were flying! What a fun lesson and I’m sure we will hear more from our future engineers.

Innovations Academy

Portfolio Review Days

February at Innovations Academy (IA) is known for Portfolio Review Days. Parents come to school with their child, meet with teachers, and review the portfolio work each student keeps to demonstrate progress in learning. We have found portfolios to be an improved measure of a child’s academic skills and knowledge versus the standardized tests to which people may be accustomed. We look forward to seeing our parents.

The 2019–2020 IA public lottery is on Monday, Mar. 4, at 1 pm. First round acceptance notices will be emailed on Wednesday, Mar. 6.

Next school year we will be located just nine miles away in Kearny Mesa in an amazing new facility. It has innovative learning spaces, a gym, multipurpose room with a stage, and a creative, interactive outdoor play space.

St. Gregory the Great Catholic School

St. Gregory the Great Catholic School begins this calendar year celebrating our 10th anniversary of the opening of our school. In 2009 we started out with just 65 students in kindergarten through 4th grade, adding a grade each year until we had the first graduating class in June 2014. In fact, the graduating Class of 2018 was the first group to begin their education journey at St. Gregory the Great kindergarten in 2009!

Our campus was expanded last year to include a science lab, learning center, and preschool. In response to requests from the community, a 2-year-old program was added to the 3- and 4-year-old programs, and preschool hours were extended to 4:30 pm to meet the needs of our families.

The addition of a STEM-Robotics Program to our curriculum, as well as participation in the Diocese of San Diego’s Academic Decathlon competition, further enhances the many opportunities available to our students. Faith families continue to demonstrate the connection between students from the different grade levels.

Our sports teams amaze us with their Guardian grit, teamwork, and sportsmanship. We are particularly proud of the varsity boys’ flag football team (above), which went undefeated for the second year in a row, winning the San Diego County Parochial Championship.

There are a number of exciting activities planned to celebrate our anniversary, including a tile mosaic project that will be a permanent part of our landscape. Also, we will hold our annual gala in May.
