Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS)

Principal's Message

As we begin the second semester of the school year, there are many important items and events on the horizon. First and foremost, seniors must continue their rigor in school as keeping up the second semester grades is important for final college acceptance. Graduation is right around the corner and grades, citizenship, and overall school attendance must remain at satisfactory and above to be eligible for senior activities. Detailed information regarding senior activities has been mailed to homes and is posted on the school website.

Our undergrads will begin to focus on their course selections for the next school year. Counselors will provide students and parents with this information, as well as hold evening meetings to explain the process for matriculating from one grade level to the next. Parents and students from Marshall Middle School attended our "Falcon Night" in January where the impressive opportunities and activities that SRHS provides for students were shared.

Next fall we are excited to offer a new elective course called "Introduction to Green Technology." This course, along with Introduction to Engineering, will be housed in our brand new building opening in September 2012. The sustainable energy building will be a site to see! The structure seems to grow daily.

In November the board of education mandated that students in the class of 2017--current 7th graders--will be required to complete two courses in the College and Career Technology Education (CCTE) field to meet graduation requirements. The aforementioned classes are two examples of CCTE courses, and we will explain how these courses will complement other classes as we receive more definitive information.

Our winter season athletic teams continue to perform at their best and we thank the parents and coaches for their support of our students. It is encouraging to see our students demonstrate sportsmanship, character, and charisma as they compete. The dance performances in January were a success as our students displayed their talents and skills and entertained us with their abilities.

Congratulations to our AFJROTC cadets who participated in the Regulation Drill Meet at Madison High School in December. Our Falcon cadets placed first in Platoon Drill, first in the Senior Color Guard, and Cadet Joshua Rowe placed second in Basic Individual Drill. Their success is credited to our two outstanding instructors, Col. Hogan and Sgt. Major Toledo. These gentlemen go above and beyond to ensure that our students receive the very best instruction and practice as they compete regularly and continue to win.

The SRHS Foundation continues to work effortlessly to help raise money for many of the academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities that make our school outshine the rest! Final plans are being made for the "Taste of the Ranch," a community tradition that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Qualcomm in Sorrento Valley. Check out this Newsletter's centerfold for all the details. We hope you join us for an evening of fun, great food, and auction items.

We appreciate your supply donations and are encouraged as they continue to arrive at school. Donations may be dropped off at our front office and may be directed toward the nurse, a teacher, or a department. Several teachers have posted a wish list on their website.

Principal's Message

Dear Scripps Ranch Families and Community Members,

We begin our second semester on Monday, Jan. 30. This semester will be a busy time of year as we begin speaking to our students about their classes for next year. Parents will receive information about course selections from our counseling department in the next few months. We also welcome our new 5th grade students and parents to Thurgood Marshall Middle School. We look forward to meeting our new group of students and are excited to share all the great opportunities we have for Scripps Ranch middle schoolers. We also will have student and parent tours. Please visit [www.marshallmiddle.org] for dates and times of our parent tours.

Like I addressed in the last SRCA Newsletter, the budget situation is still very uncertain. San Diego Unified faces an extraordinary budget shortfall again for next year and at this point we are unclear of the impact on our schools. I encourage you to continue to be informed as we learn more about the state budget crisis. Our most important investment is our children and their education. Investing now will have long-lasting effects on our community and global society for years to come. For more information regarding our budget updates, please visit the district website at [www.sandi.net].

Regardless of our budget situation, we will continue to refine our instructional practices in order to best support the needs of our students. We will continue to focus our efforts on developing critical skills for our 21st century learners such as critical thinking and problem solving. We will challenge our students with a rigorous education in order to prepare them for their future in high school and college.

I would like to thank you as you continue to work with us to provide a solid middle school education for our students. Sincerely,

Michelle Irwin. MMS Principal

Yearbook Information

Have you purchased your yearbook yet?! It's not too late! Don't let your child's middle school memories pass them by. You can purchase an award-winning yearbook on the MMS website at [www.marshallmiddle.org], scroll down, and click on the "Click here to buy your yearbook" tab. Hurry and buy your 100% color yearbook now for the low price of $45 either online or in the financial office...quantities are limited!

You also can include your own photos for consideration in the yearbook! Simply go to the website and click on the "ReplayIt" banner. Make sure to include names of students in photos as we cannot include photos with no names. It's also a good idea to give a short description of what's happening in the picture.

Fall Semester Ends

The fall semester ended on Friday, Jan. 27. Students will bring home semester report cards on Friday, Feb. 3. Remember to ask your child for his or her report card! If you don't like what you see, contact your child's teachers to find out what your child can do to improve his or her grades!

Suicide Prevention Education

Suicide is the second leading cause of non-natural death in San Diego County for youth ages 10-14, and the third for youth ages 15-24. A 2009 survey of San Diego Unified School District students found that 13.9%--more than 18,000 students--seriously considered suicide districtwide. Of those who considered suicide, 72% made a plan and 6% actually attempted suicide.

Current data indicates that those numbers have significantly increased over the past few years, especially for elementary and middle school students. In response to these alarming statistics, the Suicide Prevention Education Awareness Knowledge (SPEAK) Program was developed to educate students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

In support of the above, MMS staff will be in-serviced by SPEAK trainers after school during a staff meeting on Monday, Feb. 6. Marshall parents will be able to attend a presentation that same night--Monday, Feb. 6--in the Marshall theater from 6 to 7 pm.

On Monday, Feb. 13, all Marshall 7th graders will attend a presentation in the theater by PE class. That week a consultant from the Yellow Ribbon Program will work with our Associated Student Body (ASB) advisor to plan a Yellow Ribbon Week, so that our 6th and 8th graders also will have an awareness of the seriousness of this topic, as well as where and how to give and ask for help.

High School Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements have changed effective with the class of 2016--MMS's current 8th graders. Although the district no longer provides funding for high school planning, Marshall counselors will host two nighttime High School Four Year Planning Conferences in February for our 8th grade students and one parent, as space will be severely limited.

The new high school graduation and college entrance requirements will be discussed in order to create tentative High School Four Year Plans. Both conferences will be in the MMS multipurpose room from 6:30 to 9 pm. Students whose last name begins with A-L will meet on Thursday, Feb. 2. Students whose last name begins with M-Z will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

College: Making it Happen

Attention 7th grade students and parents: on Thursday, Mar. 1, Marshall, Wangenheim, and Challenger middle schools will co-host a college preparation night for 7th graders and their parents. It will be in the Wangenheim auditorium from 6 to 7:30 pm.

The speaker will discuss the new high school graduation requirements, along with college preparation information for the University of California, California State University, community colleges, and private/independent colleges and universities. Also, step-by-step information that every parent and child should know regarding how to prepare for high school and college will be presented. They will discuss middle school and high school courses for college prep, college entrance requirements, as well as financial aid. We encourage our 7th grade parents and students to attend!

5th to 6th Grade Matriculation to Marshall

  • Fifth graders from Ellen Browning Scripps (EBS) and Miramar Ranch (MRE) elementary schools will tour Marshall on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
  • Fifth graders from Dingeman and Jerabek elementary schools will come to Marshall on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 11:30 am to 1 pm to tour their new school!

Parent Matriculation Night, an informational meeting for parents of all incoming 6th graders, will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 7, from 6:30 to 8 pm in the MMS multipurpose room.

MMS counselors will visit our elementary feeder schools in March. We will introduce students to MMS, talk about course selections, and answer any questions or concerns.

Counselors will visit the schools on:

  • MRE-Thursday, Mar. 8, 8:30-10 am
  • Jerabek--Friday, Mar. 9, 11:30 am-1 pm
  • Dingeman--Monday, Mar. 12, 10:30 am-noon
  • EBS--Tuesday, Mar. 13, 9-10:45 am

8th Grade Promotion/Retention Policy

  • At the end of the school year, students with two or more Fs in core subjects--English, math, history, or science--must attend summer school. Students who do not attend summer school will be retained unless exempted by CST scores of "Basic" or above in English/Language Arts (ELA) or math.
  • At the end of summer school, only those students with Fs remaining in both English and math and who score "Below Basic" or "Far Below Basic" on the CSTs in both ELA and mathematics will be retained.
  • All other students will promote to 9th grade with appropriate supports.

Only second semester grades count toward the retention policy, and this could change given more budget cuts.

MMS Geography Bee

The following students participated in this year's Marshall Middle School Preliminary Geography Bee: Deine Shin, Arielle Johnston, Chloe Kim, Julia Laporte, Kyler Sakumoto, Ankita Nair, Carly Stachwick, Alexandria Fagan, Eric Pascual, Grant Rupe, Lilly Ryll, Charlie Wong, Belle Phommavong, Matthew Jewell, Zack Ash-Reynolds, Erik Siegel, Virginia Jurist, Chris Nguyen, Brennan Straub, Samuel In, Max Audick, Trevor Gilbert, Marco Williams, Jairus Ocampo, Jennifer Bahn, Kayla Bunch, and Nicholas Vilbrandt.

A Message from our Principal

Greetings Dingeman Families, Friends, and Community,

"Hear Ye! Hear Ye!" If you are wondering where to take your next family vacation, check out Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. I have been there several times and I still anticipate my return. Since many of us will not be there anytime soon, we are bringing Colonial Williamsburg to you! They have a saying there, "That the future may learn from the past." That's exactly what our 5th grade teachers and students are doing, and they are getting ready to prepare an amazing trip for our school community.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, students and parents will step back in time to 1776 in our Colonial Williamsburg Living Museum presented by our 5th graders. As 18th century early American colonists, students will re-enact the life and times during the American Revolution. They will remain "in character" throughout their presentations, ranging from education, home life, political figures, fashion and apparel, food, entertainment, and military life. Come learn about what life was like for the colonists as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the people who were there!

Not only can you learn what colonial life was like, you can learn what it's like to be an artist! Our fabulous Family Faculty Connection (FFC) will host several Family Art Nights where you and your child can learn, side by side, famous artists' techniques and create your very own masterpiece! Who knows, you might be the next Picasso or O'Keeffe!

We look forward to seeing you and your child at these enriching programs.

In Partnership for Excellence,

Kimie Lochtefeld, Dingeman Principal

From Our FFC President

February is always one of my favorite times of the year. It is a month where we express our friendship and love to one another, celebrate our presidents with some time off from school, and many host a Super Bowl or Oscar Night party! This month we could look for a groundhog, celebrate Mardi Gras, or try to remember to add an extra day for leap year. February is just a busy month.

We're busy at Dingeman too. Our Art Corps program will conclude our three-night Family Art Nights. Thank you to all the parents who help make these special evenings happen--with a special acknowledgment to Dee Michetti and Nercy Wong, our Art Corps chairs.

In addition, Lisa Vontsolos, our assemblies coordinator, arranged another wonderful FFC-sponsored performance for the students. This month Dingeman will welcome a troupe to perform the play Alice in Wonderland.

Finally, I would like to send my "heartfelt" thanks to all the Dingeman volunteers who generously give their time and talents to the FFC programs and enrichment opportunities. I hope everyone has a wonderful February.

Jaylene Farry, FFC President

Principal's Message

Dear Scripps Ranch Families and Community Members,

Welcome back after our extended holiday break. I hope you all had a wonderful time with family and loved ones. I look forward to an exciting 2012.

Thank you to all the parents and families who have contributed to our school, allowing us to continue our programs and services that benefit our students. It's such a joy to be at a school with motivated and excited students, a truly professional staff, and involved parents.

More than ever because of the state's economy, the continued success of our school depends on the involvement and generosity of our parents and community. Jerabek students, teachers, and staff are dedicated to making meaningful contributions to our city, state, and country. We cannot do this alone.

I encourage you to stay involved as we learn more about the budget crisis. The coming months will be challenging and important as our district determines its priorities and budget for the 2012-2013 school year. The investment we make in our students and their learning will have far-reaching ramifications to our community and country for years to come. For more information, please visit our district's website at [www.sandi.net].

Jerabek's staff and students truly appreciate all your hard work and efforts as we continue to strive for excellence.

Student Council Shares the Love

We have spirit, yes we do! The Jerabek Student Council was very busy in December. A stuffed Jerry the Koala proudly sits in the classrooms of Mrs. Burrie's 3rd grade class and Mrs. McCormick's kindergarten class for having the most Jerabek spirit. Students are encouraged to keep wearing their Jerabek or green shirts every Spirit Thursday. No telling where Jerry the Koala will sit his furry self next month.

Ku-toes to all our Koalas! The Student Council also organized a weeklong Sock Drive before winter break. A total of 1,442 pairs of socks were donated. Mrs. McDaniel's 4th grade class stepped into the lead with 135 pairs. The socks went to the Salvation Army for those in need during the holiday season.

Sponsor Spotlight

Jerabek families eat "heart-y" for a good cause...no cooking and a guaranteed social hour makes for a true fun-raiser during monthly Restaurant Night. From Pat & Oscar's to Rubio's to this month's Sammy's, there is always something scrumptious on the menu. "Our local restaurants have been so generous and helpful," says Anna Tarvyd Klein, Restaurant Night coordinator. "We always have a great turnout of families and it's loads of fun." This school year Restaurant Nights have already raised more than $1,000 for our students. With 20% of purchases going back to the school, the great meals serve up proceeds to help Jerabek with extra expenses.

Miramar Ranch Elementary (MRE)

From the Principal

Dear Families and Friends of Miramar Ranch,

January got off to a great start for the new year with many learning opportunities for both teachers and students. The children impressed us with how quickly they moved back into their school routines after the holiday break and are ready to bring the critical thinking skills honed in literacy and math to a new science experience this month.

Teachers had several opportunities to work together, receiving training on supporting all students through differentiated instruction and intervention plans, and on increasing student engagement through higher level questioning. As we work and learn together sharing our ideas and experiences, our instructional practice continues to improve.

February is a busy month with more staff training and collaborative time for teachers. Students in grades 1 through 5 will show their academic progress on the benchmark tests in reading and math, and 5th graders will also show their physical fitness through the Fitnessgram assessment that begins in February.

One of our most popular events, the Father/Daughter Dance, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16, right before the four-day holiday. Stay out late and dance the night away! Following the holiday weekend is the Family-Faculty Association (FFA)-sponsored Book Fair. Look for dates and times so you could come to the library and shop with your children.

As always, thank you for all you do for our children and our school. Working together, we are able to do so much!

Sincerely,

Peggy Crane, MRE Principal

Message from your AFP Board

The school year is already half over, and there are still many more exciting events coming up. Our EBS volunteers are working as hard as ever to serve our school. And the Academic Fundraising Partnership (AFP) Board appreciates everyone's time and effort.

We started off the year with a Recycling Drive. EBS families brought in household electronics and other items for recycling. What a great way to help our environment and school at the same time! Pam Marvuglio and her volunteers did a fantastic job with this event!

The Mother Son Movie Night was a great success! It was a wonderful event that allowed moms and sons to spend quality time with each other. That is just priceless! Thank you to Pam Marvuglio and her team for arranging this event!

The much-anticipated Father/Daughter Dance is on Friday, Feb. 10. This event is so much fun and shouldn't be missed! If you are interested in helping with this fundraiser, please contact Diane Reed at [idreed_2000@yahoo.com].

Family Science Nights have arrived at EBS! These events are free to all EBS students and their families. Our hope is that providing your children and your family with this opportunity will foster a love for science while allowing you to spend quality time with your children. Parents and teachers can work together to improve attitudes toward science and encourage students to build a strong scientific foundation that will serve them well in upper grades and college.

Each grade level participates in one grade-appropriate Family Science Night during the school year. Students and parents experience an evening of fun and educational hands-on science by rotating between six stations: life science, earth science, chemical science, physical science, environmental science, and it's a small, small world (microscopes). When junior scientists aren't busy solving a crime using forensic science or building circuits, you might find them exploring polymers or observing Brine shrimp under a microscope.

Each Family Science Night begins at 6:45 pm and concludes before 8 pm.

  • 5th grade--Thursday, Feb. 23
  • 4th grade--Thursday, Mar. 8
  • 3rd grade--Thursday, Mar. 22
  • 2nd grade--Thursday, Apr. 12
  • 1st grade--Thursday, Apr. 26
  • Kindergarten--Thursday, May 31

Collect those box tops and labels! There is a collection period this month, and each box top and label benefits EBS.

Please visit us at [www.ebs-afp.org] often for news about our events!

eScrip

The eScrip program is an easy way for you to help EBS earn money through spending rewards. Every time you use your rewards card or credit card at participating retailers, a portion of your purchases are automatically donated to our school. You can also shop at the eScrip online mall and EBS earns money. Last year, eScrip raised $15,000 for EBS!

Innovations Academy

Innovations Academy, a K-8 public charter school, is new to Scripps Ranch this year. Our belief in experiential learning and a deep respectful, social, emotional program sets us apart from many current public education choices.

Innovations Academy uses a program called Positive Discipline as a basis for our schoolwide discipline policy. It is a program that does not use external motivators such as rewards and punishments but believes in respectful tools for developing intrinsic motivation. At Innovations Academy we believe that successful people know more than just the traditional three Rs of education. Positive Discipline adds three more Rs: knowing how to be respectful, responsible, and resourceful.

The challenge that arises for some people with the practice of Positive Discipline is that change doesn't happen overnight. Learning these skills is a process that takes longer for children who are accustomed to behaving in a paradigm of punishments and rewards.

We invite all community members to our Celebration of Learning Community Open House on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 6 pm. Please contact our office at 271-1414 for details. We plan to show Race to Nowhere at 6 pm. All visitors are welcome to explore our school, speak with staff and student ambassadors, and view the work we do. See you there!

If this philosophy resonates with you, our application period for the 2012-2013 school year is open on our website at [www.innovationsacademy.org].

Potential student applications for the 2012-2013 school year are now being accepted for kindergarten through 7th grade. Visit [www.stggcs.org] and click on the "Admissions" tab. Download and complete the potential student form. Email the form to [office@stggcs.org] or fax it to the school office at 397-1294.

If you are considering Catholic education for your child, please attend an information meeting at our school:

  • Prospective New Kindergarten Parent Meeting--Thursday, Feb. 9, 6:30 pm
  • Prospective Parent Information Meeting, grades 1-7--Tuesday, Feb. 28, 6:30 pm

Topics presented at the meetings will include our mission and philosophy, developmental readiness and admission requirements and procedures, curriculum, and extracurricular activities.

Guitar lessons are available after school. Students in grades K-4 have the opportunity to participate in pee wee soccer after school. Student Council provides many opportunities for leadership, service, and outreach to the community.

For more information about St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, please contact the school office at 397-1290 or [office@stggcs.org]. We continue to enroll new students throughout the school year!
