Always Something Going On
By the time February rolls around, the holidays are just a memory and we have usually fallen into our routines once again. Here in Scripps Ranch, nothing ever seems routine. There is always something going on. In fact, one of the most popular community events is this month--Scripps Ranch High School's Taste of the Ranch.
Imagine an evening of delicious food from our local restaurants, time to socialize with friends, and bidding on amazing auction items. This year, if you can't attend, you can bid online! All that and you help Scripps Ranch kids at the same time. You couldn't ask for more! Hurry and get your tickets before they sell out. Details are on pages 40-41.
An issue that has been top of mind for a couple of months now are the copper wire thefts that have darkened some of our parks. Clay Bingham, city parks deputy director, gives us an update on the repairs. Thanks, Clay, for always being a friend to Scripps Ranch.
Here's a really difficult subject to discuss, but one that is so very important--youth suicide. Unfortunately, it's on the rise, and now you have the opportunity to attend a presentation on suicide prevention. It's on Monday, Feb. 6, at 6 pm in the Marshall Middle School theater. This is not just for parents but for anyone who interacts with young people, and that's most of us--grandparents, neighbors, coaches. Kudos to Marshall Middle School for tackling this critical topic. More information is on page 31.
If you check the Schools section, starting on page 27, you'll see that there's always something going on at our campuses. And even though it's only February, our terrific Scripps Ranch public schools are looking ahead to next year. Check out the section for important meeting information and to see what's ahead for your child.
One Scripps Ranch High School senior is especially looking forward to walking across the stage on graduation. He's a courageous young man who overcomes challenges every day. And while he may have physical limitations, he and his "surf dog" hit the waves often. Don't miss this uplifting story by our Elinor Reiss on page 43.
Speaking of inspiring young people, there are an extraordinary number of Eagle Scouts who hail from Scripps Ranch Boy Scout troops. It's not easy to make it to this elite Scout level. Starting on page 49, check out the latest group of young men who reached this milestone. Congratulations, Eagle Scouts!
The Scripps Ranch Civic Association (SRCA) always has something going on to benefit our community. Your organization is in the midst of its Fundraising Drive for 2012. As you may recall from last month, the theme is "Together We Are Scripps Ranch." Please lend your support by simply making a small donation. Thank you! See page 7 for details.
If one of your New Year's resolutions was to get more involved with your community, page 67 has some suggestions. Scripps Ranch groups always have something going on and there may be a volunteer opportunity that fits your style. Interested in showbiz? The Scripps Ranch Theatre has a spot for you! How about helping plan our community? The Miramar Ranch North Planning Committee has openings. Keeping your community safe? Neighborhood Watch. There are more, so take a look.
Finally, we know Scripps Ranch is a community of "doers," you know, people who get things done. Nominate your favorite "doer" to be honored at Recognition Night. Details are on page 5.
February means Valentine's Day. I would like to suggest you celebrate it by committing a random act of kindness!
