25 Years, Hundreds of Families and a Whole Lotta Guitar

Longtime Scripps Ranch resident, Mike Slayen founder and instructor of The Guitar Aces is celebrating 25 years sharing his unique approach teaching guitar in the Scripps Ranch and Poway areas. Although Mike works with all ages the award-winning instructor is known for his patience and success working with pre-teens ages 6+

• International Program: With the power of the internet The Guitar Aces have increased it’s reach to students throughout the U.S. and abroad with their farthest-reaching students in Japan

“It has been an incredible journey working with so many amazing families and students over the years! I initially started as a licensee of a national guitar program, however, my students were quickly moving beyond what that company’s materials could provide. I made the decision to strike out on my own as The Guitar Aces to develop materials and facilitate the needs of the kids and put my own stamp on all aspects of the program.”

“I am very proud to have had students who continue to play guitar at high levels. However, my greatest joy is offering a positive musical experience to all students! Seeing a child figure out they CAN learn something when they think they cannot is as great a feeling as seeing the ‘natural’ students succeed in their musical journeys. I’m extremely proud of how we continued lessons without ‘missing a beat’ during the Covid shut down. None of us had experience with online lessons, however, every single family I had committed to make the switch to online. The ability to continue weekly lessons and seeing myself and their other guitar friends online helped offer some normalcy in the kid’s routines. Sometimes the human aspect is greater than music itself!”

To celebrate 25 years, The Guitar Aces, will host an open house at another Scripps resident’s establishment, Hunters of Hendrix Coffee, 10045 Carroll Canyon Rd Suite C, San Diego, CA 92131. The event will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2-5PM. Any/all current and former students and families are encouraged to drop by, share stories and catch up with Mike. For those interested in their children becoming future Guitar Aces stop by and say hello, as well.

In addition to teaching Mike Slayen is a lifelong guitarist and native San Diegan who performs regularly at local public venues, weddings and private events both solo and with his current band Relay.
