Scripps Ranch Schools Committee (SRSC)

In these reports we will include information presented during the Scripps Ranch Schools Committee meetings, as well as updated information about issues that affect our schools.

New Jerabek Principal

We welcome principal Kristie Joiner to Jerabek Elementary School. Kristie comes to Scripps Ranch from the Santee School District, where she was a vice principal. She had worked at Santee since 2008, according to the district website.

Prior to that, Kristie worked for the South Bay Union School District from 1998 until 2008. She received her undergraduate degree at Southwestern College and her bachelors, teaching credential, masters, and administrative credential from Point Loma Nazarene University.

The Scripps Ranch Schools Committee looks forward to working with Kristie during the school year. Welcome to Scripps Ranch, Kristie!

District Budget Update

In late July the Board of Education adopted a revised 2014–2015 school district budget, taking into consideration the increased payments for CalSTRS, the teachers’ retirement pension system, required by the state budget adopted in June. In the district’s three-year budget presentation, the added pension payments increased future budget shortfalls for the district to an anticipated $63 million in 2015–2016 and $84 million in 2016–2017. Possible ideas were proposed, but concrete solutions for these shortfalls have not been adopted.

Next Meeting

Scripps Ranch Schools Committee meetings are generally held the third Wednesday of the month at 4:30 pm in the Marshal Middle School community room during the school year. We do not meet during the summer. At our next meeting we will review some of the partnership agreements that other school communities, or clusters, have negotiated with the school district.

Those agreements allow the schools to have waivers from the district’s standard operating procedures in such things as hiring and testing. We will evaluate whether it would be beneficial for the Scripps Ranch cluster to explore developing some manner of partnership agreement.

The September meeting is on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 pm. All meetings are open to the public.
