Scripps Ranch Schools Committee (SRSC)
New Area Superintendent
The September meeting was the first with our new area superintendent, Fabiola Bagula (left). She was a principal for 10 years and a vice principal and resource teacher before becoming an area superintendent. To find out more about Fabiola, visit the new Schools Committee webpage at [www.scrippsranch.org/schools]. Welcome, Fabiola!
The committee heard about the partnership agreement between La Jolla schools and the district. La Jolla cluster representatives shared the history of the process, how the agreement modifies the district’s standard operating procedures, and answered questions. A copy of the partnership agreement is on the SRSC webpage. As of press time, the committee was set to consider whether to pursue a partnership agreement with the district for the Scripps Ranch cluster at its November meeting.
Thank You, SRCA
The Scripps Ranch Civic Association (SRCA) representative to the Schools Committee, Elissa Barber, told us that all Scripps Ranch public schools received $500 grants from the SRCA. Look for how the funds were used in the Schools section. Elissa also encouraged applications for the $1,000 Dingeman SRCA Scholarship for community service, awarded annually to a graduating SRHS senior.
School Calendar 2015–2016
The district’s Calendar Committee is considering two different start dates for the 2015–2016 school year. Because Labor Day is on Monday, Sept. 7, next year, there is concern that starting school after Labor Day, as is typical, would be too late. There would be negative impacts, particularly for students in Advanced Placement courses, since there would be fewer instructional days before the AP exams, which are held on a fixed date in May.
For this and other reasons, the Calendar Committee also is considering starting school on Monday, Aug. 31. The committee will meet in November to choose between the draft calendars.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 4:30 pm in the Marshall Middle School community room. All meetings are open to the public. For questions, please email parent co-chair Jaylene Farry at [[email protected]].
