Oooooooh, Aaaaaaah, Impressive!

I didn’t come up with the phrase that I am using as my theme this month. But it really captures the sentiment for some of the honors bestowed on those who live and work in our community.

Let’s start with the Scripps Ranch High School Teacher of the Year—for the second year in a row! Master Sergeant Ferdinand Toledo hasn’t just taught the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) at SRHS for 10 years, he has devoted his life to it. The amount of personal time he uses to lead this extraordinary program is mind-boggling.

So to honor his commitment to students in our community, the County Board of Supervisors named January 17, 2019, Master Sergeant Ferdinand Toledo Day in the County of San Diego! Ooooooooh, Aaaaaaah, Impressive! He was recognized for his public service to our school and students. County supervisor Kristin Gaspar actually came to the school and made the surprise presentation. In fact, you can see video of that moment at

Sgt. T, as he is affectionately called, doesn’t just teach academics and physical fitness in the AFJROTC program, he teaches students to be leaders. We send our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Sgt. T for all of his hard work with Scripps Ranch students. At left, Sgt. T (middle) is pictured with AFJROTC instructor Lieutenant Colonel Michael Sheldon and SRHS principal Nicole Dewitt.

As to where I “borrowed” my theme from this month, turn to page 32. You will find an award given to another exceptional person in our community. This resident has given so much of his time and talent to young people as well. Oooooooh, Aaaaaaah, Impressive!

In other news, there are new developments proposed for our community. The Scripps Ranch Planning Group is staying on top of all that and will address some of them at its February meeting. For details, go to page 19.

SRHS female seniors, it’s time to apply for a scholarship from the Scripps Ranch Women’s Club. See page 43 for more.

The Philanthropic Chicks of Scripps Ranch group has been around for a bit but has flown under the radar. Find out more about it on pages 30 and 31. All I can say about the group’s accomplishments is “Oooooooh, Aaaaaaah, Impressive!”

On Valentine’s Day share the love with family, friends, and strangers. To quote Socrates, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
