John Lloyd “Johnny” Goebel, 63, of Scripps Ranch in San Diego, passed away on September 12, 2023, after a difficult battle with cancer. Johnny was born on August 28, 1960, to Lloyd and Martha “Marty” Goebel in Whittier, CA. After graduating from Lawrence High School in 1978, Johnny proceeded to get his B.S. in Computer Information Systems Science at Stockton University in 1982. After graduation, Johnny pursued a career in computer programming, culminating in a long-term software engineering management role with Qualcomm, Inc.

In 1992 he wed Sylvia Vogel and they went on to have two sons, William Christopher Goebel and Robert John Goebel. Johnny was a devoted husband and father, nurturing a wonderful marriage with Sylvia for 31 years and always playing an active and loving role in the lives of his sons. Johnny was a natural-born leader, instinctively stepping up to not only professional opportunities but also coaching his sons’ sports teams, organizing charitable endeavors and events, and breathing life into new friend groups surrounding his interests. In particular, he actively sought opportunities to lead in the service of others through the church and its community. Johnny was an active participant in barbershop quartet and chorus singing, with his distinguished and very popular bass voice. He also was an avid Texas hold’em poker player, host, instructor, and occasional participant in the World Series of Poker, as well as a passionate golfer. His broad cadre of golfers, poker colleagues and Barbershop associates, including Royce’s Voices, along with co-workers and members of his church community, never ceased to appreciate his talents, conviviality, and magnificent wit and sense of humor. Johnny was loved by a wide circle of friends and family and will be dearly missed.

Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd, and his brothers, Mark and Christopher, and is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his sons Will and Rob, and his mother and stepfather, Marty and Allan Salkin. A celebration of Johnny’s life is being held at the Church at Rancho Bernardo on October 19th at 1PM PST. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to a cause dear to Johnny’s heart, specifically highlighting the Harmony Foundation and the City Heights Runners.
