05/15/14 12:30 pm - Press conference and tour of Hoyt Park fire that occurred May 14th. The fire burned about an acre of city owned open space. Fire may have started in the creek and proceeded up the northside hill towards two homes on Canyon Lake Drive. SDPD ordered some residents to evacuate. No damage to any structures and the fire was extinguished in less than two hours. This like all city owned open space was treated for brush management (100 feet from back of habitable structures) by City Park and Recreation under the supervision of the SDFD within the past year.
SRCA President Bob Ilko joined Mayor Kevin Faulconer, City Councilmember Mark Kersey and Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman to update the community on yesterday's canyon fire. A rapid response from residents, police, and fire led to quick containment. No cause identified yet, however, the Fire-Rescue Department's Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating. Kudos to our amazing firefighters and police. Chief Zimmerman said that officers were first on the scene followed by SDFD, Poway FD and MCAS Miramar FD. The message from all officials is to be prepared and if you see any smoke or flames, call 911 immediately.
