HEATON, Roger Laurence –

Roger was born September 18, 1949 in Rockville Center, NY to Gordon W. and Anne Heaton.

He lived in San Diego, CA, for many years; a seaside city that he loved and in which he watched his three sons grow up. He became a resident of Cape Coral, FL in 2019. It was here that he passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023.

He spent his childhood in Wheaton, IL, playing sports from an early age. He was in the first graduating class (1967) of Wheaton North High School, where he was an exceptional athlete, earning All-Star honors with varsity letters in football, baseball and wrestling. His effervescent personality shone through even then, being elected to student body president. He would later return to his high school in Illinois as a biology teacher and 3 sport coach for a few years before deciding to pursue a career in law.

He got his undergraduate degree in Psychology at Denison University in Granville, OH, where he excelled academically and lettered in baseball. He attended law school at the University of San Diego. He received his law degree and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1982. He practiced law in San Diego for decades, where his thoughtful listening skills endeared him to the local communities he served.

Outside of his professional life, Roger had three wonderful sons, Brad, Randy and Ross with his former wife. All of his boys were avid athletes after their father. Roger’s children and extensive community of friends brought him great joy and pride. He was a longtime member of the Old Pros Softball league in San Diego, and he is credited with starting the Wheaton North High School Alumni Association with his fellow classmates and serving as its first president for a number of years.

He is survived by his children, William Bradford Heaton of San Diego, CA, Randall Arthur Heaton (Melissa) of San Diego, CA, and Ross Laurence Heaton of Cape Coral, FL; sister, Laurie Ferry (Bill) of Elburn, IL, and Gordon D. Heaton of St. Charles, IL; as well as his grandchild, Henry Heaton. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, William Bradford (Brad) Heaton.
