BARNETT, RUTH M., 98, passed on peacefully on February 6, 2012 at her Scripps Ranch home. Her beloved children, Rob and Betty Jean, shared her final hours. Ruth was born October 10, 1913 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Peter W. and Maude McRoberts. She was their youngest child, having a sister, Esther and brother, Bill. Living nearly a century, Ruth became the matriarch of the Twin Falls McRoberts family. She was married in 1948 to Robert A. Barnett, with whom she had two children, Rob and Betty Jean. Following their divorce, she single-handedly raised her children, teaching them the values of hard work, responsibility and “living on a shoestring.” When her children were teenagers and she was in her 50’s, she returned to college in order to improve their lives, having begun her college degree in 1931 at the University of Idaho. She graduated from San Diego State College with a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology (minor in psychology). She worked as a bookkeeper for numerous companies and served in the American Red Cross from 1944-1946. After graduating from SDSU, she taught lip reading to stroke victims and classes in defensive driving to “drunk drivers.” As her brother Bill had, she became a stock broker in 1980 and an expert at explaining financial matters to the elderly. She was a lifelong member of the Delta Gamma sorority and active in various service organizations, including the Blind Children’s Center in Los Angeles. She was a breast cancer survivor since 1979. She is survived by her children, Rob Barnett, of San Diego, and Betty J. Barnett, of Colorado Springs; her nieces, Linda McRoberts Carnine, of Eugene, OR and Stephanie Locke, of Lynchburg, VA; her stepchild-ren, Greg Barnett of Renton, WA, Tom Barnett of Canoga Park, CA, Caroline Barnett of Ocean Shores, WA and Rick Barnett of Los Angeles; and nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
