Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS)
July was committed to configuring our staff and student schedules for the 2015–2016 school year. We are excited to welcome many new members to our Falcon family including our two new vice principals, Antonio Gutierrez Jr. and Matthew Lawson.
In the next few weeks our students and athletes begin preparation for school and fall sports. Athletes are reminded to make sure they have completed the athletic participation form that includes their physical and insurance information so they are physically and mentally prepared for the fall season. Our coaches and staff members know the importance of preparation and want to do everything possible so our students have a positive and successful year. Please continually check our website at www.srhsfalcons.org for updated information about fall sports, including details about tryouts and schedules.
I look forward to meeting our students at our annual “Kick-Off.” Students will be able to get their yearbook and ID card pictures taken, receive class schedules, pick up books, and purchase Homecoming Dance tickets. Information regarding Kick-Off and the personalized enrollment form was mailed to homes in June. Please check the website for more information, including details about Kick-Off transportation and the forms required in order to participate. Kick-Off is for currently enrolled students only. The schedule is:
- Tuesday, Aug. 25—Seniors, 7:30–9:30 am;
- Wednesday, Aug. 26—Juniors, 7:30–9:30 am; Sophomores, 10 am–noon; and,
- Thursday, Aug. 27—Freshmen, 7:30–11:30 am, by birth month.

School begins Tuesday, Sept. 8. Students should report to the quad by 7:10 am to receive an official class schedule. The class schedule for the first day will be Core first, then periods 1–6. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Go Falcons!

Dear Scripps Ranch Community and Families,
We hope you are enjoying your summer with friends and family. We are looking forward to a new school year! The administration, teachers, and staff are looking forward to working with you as we prepare all of our students for the expectations of high school, higher education, and the 21st century. At Thurgood Marshall Middle School we challenge each of our students to reach their full potential with our quality instructional program. We will continue to develop a positive relationship with our parents and the Scripps Ranch community.
The MMS office is closed until Wednesday, Aug. 26. Beginning on that day, we will be able to enroll any new student who has moved into Scripps Ranch. If your child has attended any of the Scripps Ranch elementary schools, you do not need to enroll your child. For more enrollment information, please visit our website at www.marshallmiddle.org.
Students and parents will receive a welcome back letter by early August. With the letter, you and your child will receive his or her course requests for the 2015 fall semester. We have scheduled your student based upon the information submitted on the planning card. On the first day of school, official schedules with periods, teachers, and room numbers will be distributed during the first period class.
If you have any questions about these courses, please call your child’s counselor at school on Friday, Aug. 28, or Monday, Aug. 31, if the courses he or she is enrolled in are incorrect or choices have changed. It remains our school policy that we will not honor requests to have—or not have—specific teachers.
The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 8. Students should arrive between 7 and 7:30 am in order to locate their first period class by reviewing posted rosters.
We believe our students’ focus should be on academics. Proper attire significantly contributes to an atmosphere of positive learning. An educational setting is a professional place, preparing young people for a successful future. Therefore, our dress code:
- Maintains a positive education environment, free from distraction;
- Protects the health and safety of our students;
- Requires pants and shorts to fit neatly at the waist without “sagging” or being excessively tight;
- Requires clothes appropriately cover the body: no bare midriffs, no backless shirts, no T-backed tops, no low V-neck or scoop shirts, no short shorts, no high side seam cut shorts/skirts, and undergarments must not be visible;
- Does not allow tank tops or spaghetti strap shirts!
- Requires shorts and skirts be worn at the mid-thigh and can pass the “finger-tip” rule;
- Requires shoes have a back heel or back strap, no flip flops or open-toed shoes are allowed;
- Requires clothing to be free of any advertisement or promotion of any alcohol, drugs, tobacco products, or vulgarity;
- Must be free of any depictions/illustrations that demean or negatively represent any gender, race, color, ethnicity, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation.
We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe and positive school environment. Please follow these guidelines when shopping for new school clothes.

MMS School Calendar
- Friday, Sept. 4—New Student Orientation, 8–9:30 am for students/parents with last names beginning with A–L; 10–11:30 am for students/parents with last names M–Z;
- Tuesday, Sept. 8—First day of school;
- Wednesday, Sept. 16—6th grade Back to School Night;
- Thursday, Sept. 17—7th–8th grade Back to School Night; and,
- Friday, Sept. 18—Picture Day.
At the beginning of the school year there will inevitably be class changes for some students. Schedule changes will only be made for students who are in an incorrect class. This may be an elective class change, a change in the level of an academic class, or if a student is missing a required class or has a class duplicated.
Schedule changes will not be made for students who are requesting a teacher change or a period change. Students may ask any teacher for a pass to see their counselor if they have an error in their schedule that meets the above change criteria. If students are requesting any major schedule changes, parents will be notified before such changes are made.

Counselors are assigned to students alphabetically and are available by phone at 549-5400. The MMS counselors are:

I am very excited to join the wonderful team here at Dingeman Elementary and serve as your principal. I hope you are enjoying your summer vacation. Here at school we are busy preparing for September. The school exterior is being painted, and our custodial crew is cleaning and preparing the site for the school year. Here are important dates for you:

Preparing for a New Year
We still have a month of summer left, but our teachers, staff, and FFC members are hard at work making sure everything is ready for the kids. Laurel Lee Pollard is leading an inspiring team that is coordinating our volunteers this year. She would love to hear from you if you have a background in networking, party-planning/event production, graphic design, information technology, or honed organizational skills—or if you wish to add these experiences to your list of talents.
Join her on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 7 pm at her home for their first meeting. Also, mark your calendars for the Volunteer Fair that will be held after drop-off on the first day of school in the multipurpose room. Make the most of summer!
In July Jerabek teachers and staff thanked all the wonderful volunteers with breakfast, Starbucks, balloons, and certificates and awards. There was a tremendous turnout, even at the early hour of 7:45 am!
Ever year during the celebration Jerabek recognizes two exceptional volunteers who have been nominated by parents, teachers, and staff for going above and beyond during the year. The first award is the Jerabek Special Service Award. This honor was given to the Family Faculty Organization (FFO) president, Ginger Colletto. Ginger has given back to Jerabek in so many ways: she volunteers in her children’s classrooms; chaperones field trips; and has served as room mom—in addition to being the FFO president!
Ginger was described in one of her many nominations as “being tireless in her work for Jerabek.” The nomination continued by stating she always has a positive attitude and a smile on her face. We couldn’t agree more! Thank you, Ginger, for all you do! In addition, she has agreed to stay on as FFO president for the 2015–2016 year and help support the president-elect for the following school year.
The second award was the Jerabek Community Service Award. This honor is given to an individual who volunteers not only countless hours at the school but someone who volunteers in service to the children of Jerabek and their community. Cindy Brentrall was the very well-deserving recipient of this award.
She is an active volunteer in her two children’s classrooms, attends field trips, and goes above and beyond to help out at school. Beyond that, Cindy has co-chaired Movie Night, volunteered at the SRCA Community Fair Jerabek booth, and expanded the after-school enrichment programs and camps during school breaks. Many students have been the recipients of Cindy’s hard work. Thank you, Cindy, for everything you do!
Jerabek is fortunate to have so many amazing individuals who volunteer their time. It is part of what makes Jerabek so special. We wish we could present awards to each and every one of our volunteers!
Art Show/Open House
The Art Show/Open House was amazing! Thank you to Rose Callahan and Adrienn Dobell, Art Show co-chairs, for their hard work, coordination, and effort bringing together all the volunteers to create a wonderful night for the whole community. Also, we send a big “thank you” to the Kiwanis for sponsoring the Spaghetti Dinner…it was yummy!
Business Partner Thank You
Having business partners in the community is so important to Jerabek. We want to give special recognition to Rachel and Jeff Theilacker of Diversified Business Solutions. They donated a copier to the FFO, and it was incredibly helpful this year. We appreciate your generosity!
Register Your Little Koalas
The office reopens on Monday, Aug. 24, for new student registration, including kindergarten and transitional kindergarten (TK) students. Kindergartners must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, and TK students must turn 5 between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2. Office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7 am to 3 pm, and Thursday from 7 am to 2:45 pm. The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 8. See you then!

Volunteer Hawks Needed
We need volunteers to help make next year’s Halloween Carnival better than ever! Join Angela Frantz on the Halloween Committee and make it happen! Planning starts this summer, so please contact Angela at [email protected] today. All positions include a full-day commitment on the day of the carnival. Positions that need to be filled are:
- Halloween Carnival co-chair—assist chair with coordinating other committee chairs and look for parents with younger children who will be able to take it over next year.
- Games co-chair, could use two—assist Games chair with ordering rentals for day of carnival; organize all carnival games, such as supplies and so forth; coordinate classroom parent volunteer sign-up sheets and game booth selection.
- Silent Auction chair, two to three people—solicit donations and coordinate the arrangement of baskets and raffle prizes.
- Prize Team, three to four people—purchase all carnival prizes; set up prize booth on day of carnival; and supervise and work day of carnival.
- Book Sale chair, two to three people —collect used books from families in September and October; arrange books and donate after carnival.

Dear EBS Families and Community Members,
I am very proud to announce that our vice principal, Mark Morici, was named San Diego Elementary Vice Principal of the Year. Mark is a fantastic vice principal. His leadership contributes to the warm, caring, and nurturing environment here at EBS, as he is wonderful at creating positive relationships with the students. We also appreciate his professionalism and his commitment to academic excellence.

Here at EBS we are working all summer to prepare for the upcoming school year. Our custodians are deep cleaning all the classrooms and shampooing the carpets. When our students return in September our campus will be more beautiful than ever. It is too quiet here during the summer without our Penguins. I miss you all and can’t wait to see you again in the fall!

How to Enroll Your Child at EBS
If you wish to enroll your child in EBS, please stop by the office after we reopen on Monday, Aug. 24, to pick up a registration packet. To register for school you will need to bring:
- Proof of immunizations
- A birth certificate or passport to prove age
- Proof of residence in the EBS area, such as a utility bill with your name and address on it
- Proof of a dental visit after age 4
- Proof of a doctor visit/checkup after age 4

The Academic Fundraising Partnership (AFP) is holding playgroups for incoming transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten (K) families. It is a great way for kids and parents/guardians to meet new friends and other EBS families, as well as to learn a little bit about EBS.
