Renegades Represent SR in Hall of Fame Tournament

The Scripps Ranch Renegades, a 12U travel baseball team made up of Scripps Ranch Little Leaguers, recently represented our community at the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Tournament. It was held at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, NY, in late August.

Coaches, players, and their families journeyed to this small town in upstate New York, home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The tournament included 104 teams from all over the U.S., each competing in six game pool play followed

by a single-elimination tournament.

The Renegades won five out of six in pool play, placing 20th out of the 104 teams. The boys later won their first tournament game but then fell to a team from Orange County. Congratulations go to Coaches John Schumacher and Dusty Madsen for all of their hard work and dedication to the team. Also, the boys played terrific baseball! Congratulations to: Will Cavanaugh, Bruno Coimbra, Cooper Foss, Matt Guthrie, Austin Hutchison, Josh Jacobson, Sam Lindgren, Justin Madsen, Trevor Martin, Steward Pond, Jake Schumacher, Nick Sharp, Nathan Upham, and Will Van Duren.

The SRSC’s 2013 Recreational End-of-Season Tournament is on Saturday, Nov. 9 and 16, at our community fields. This is always an action-packed tournament!

Highlighting a Winner!

Elyse (above) has played soccer since she was 4½ years old, starting in the Scripps Ranch Soccer Club’s recreational league, and quickly realized she had quite a talent for the game. She went on to play competitive soccer by the age of 6.

Five years ago she joined San Diego Surf and played forward, where most years she was the leading scorer. Last year she transitioned to goalie, always wanting to play in the nets! She began playing goalie this past season and helped carry her team to the National Cup Finals in March. Her team (pictured above) won 2-0 in the finals against the So Cal Blues, and Elyse only had four goals scored on her during the entire tournament.

By winning the National Cup her U12 team was invited to play in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the Far West Regionals in June. Her team played teams from Alaska, Northern California, Hawaii, and Arizona. She made it to the finals and lost in the second overtime to Real Colorado, 3-2. Her team still accomplished being second in the U12 level for the entire west coast.

In August she competed in the San Diego Surf Cup and led her team to the finals, where they beat Irvine Slammers 2-1. Elyse only had one goal scored on her in the entire tournament. It was recently announced that her team is #1 in the U.S.!

Scripps Ranch Pop Warner Football and Cheer

As we end our eighth season, we are planning the end-of-the-year parties already! It was another great year for our football players and cheerleaders.

Our Junior Midget cheerleaders hope to attend several upcoming cheer competitions. So they have been busy doing lots of fundraising, including selling 50/50 raffle tickets at SRPW home games and having bake sales in Scripps Ranch.

We have had so much great feedback from all the families that they are happy with what their children learn about teamwork, hard work, commitment, and the fundamentals of football and cheer. We hope they will carry these great values with them as they get older. We also want to thank all of our volunteers, coaches, board members, and families for helping make SRPW such a great organization.

If your family is interested in SRPW football and cheer, please visit [www.scrippsranchpopwarner.com]. We interview for head coaches in February, and sign-ups for next season begin in March.

Lisa Gorski, SRPW President

Scripps Ranch Lacrosse had a successful 2012–2013 season! We would like to thank all of our coaches, high school volunteers, and parent volunteers who helped make the season happen. We also would like to thank our generous family sponsors and our business sponsors:

  • Scripps Ranch Old Pros
  • Sombrero Mexican Food
  • Lindgren Financial Services
  • Advanced Neurobehavioral Health of Southern California’s Concussion Clinic

The spring season is right around the corner! To get new players introduced to the sport and to get the sticks back in the hands of our experienced players, we plan to have four clinics at Marshall Middle School from 5 to 7 pm on four consecutive Mondays: Nov. 18 and 25 and Dec. 2 and 9. For details, go to [www.srlax.org].

Player registration opens Friday, Nov. 15. We look forward to another great Scripps Ranch Lacrosse season!

Scripps Teen Races at 2013 Bike World Championships

Luca Cometti (right), a 17-year-old Scripps Ranch resident, represented the United States at the 2013 Downhill Mountain Bike Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in late summer. Luca was one of six riders to represent the U.S. junior team. He placed 20th out of the top 70 worldwide downhill junior riders.

The USA Cycling Association selected Luca based on his performances. He won the Pro GRT national competition in China Peaks. He also raced in the UCI World Cup, finishing 20th, in Val di Sole, Italy, and ninth in Mount Saint Anne, Quebec.

Ever since watching his first biking video, Luca was intrigued by the excitement of the race and has dreamed of competing in the World Championships. Despite falling short of his top 10 goal, Luca said, “I enjoyed the opportunity to ride my bike in Africa alongside my favorite riders…couldn’t be happier just to be selected to represent the U.S. and couldn’t thank everyone enough for helping me get where I am. I hope to keep building from here.”

Luca concluded his racing at the Mammoth Mountain National and earned second place in the Junior category and third place in Pro Slalom. Luca competes for the Nema/Nukeproof bike team.
