Spring season for Scripps Ranch Little League (SRLL) is in full swing. The league again has worked with the San Diego Padres to organize SRLL Padres Day coming up on Sunday, May 3. Players will be able to take part in the pre-game and on-field parade. There also will be KidsFest at the park. Field level tickets are only $20. Major League Baseball and Scott’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition takes place on Saturday, Apr. 18, at 9 am at Sycamore Canyon Park on Stonebridge Parkway. This free event is open to boys and girls, 7 to 14. They will be divided into four age divisions: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. The kids have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2015 MLB All-Star Game.
The St. Gregory the Great Knights of Columbus Council, with the support of the Scripps Ranch Softball Association, is hosting the event. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete in a contest that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball and softball skills.
All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate, and a parent or guardian must fill out a registration and waiver form prior to competing. For questions, please contact Scripps Ranch resident David Cavanaugh at 603-1544 or [email protected]
GU10: State Cup Co-Champions!
From the recreation league All-Stars to the San Diego Developmental Academy (SDDA) Flight 2…nothing like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. The now-GU10 team’s inaugural 2013 season was hard fought against many high-powered offenses and stout defenses from throughout San Diego County. They battled in each and every game to no avail but no tears were shed. Modest success was had in postseason tournaments and indoor leagues, but the girls were quietly coming together and getting better.
In the spring of 2014 the girls met their new leader, Coach John Cresci. Along with a couple of personnel changes the girls (above) spent the spring and summer preparing for the upcoming season in AA-A. Once again they met stiff competition but their record did not reflect the talent or the “one team” attitude the girls possessed and were growing to embrace.
Fast forward to State Cup 2015, Mayors Division competition. With one win, one loss, and one tie in bracket play, but a goal differential in our favor, the team made it out of Coronado and headed to Orange County the next weekend. Every other team that moved on had at least two wins and a strong goal differential. Needless to say, something special was brewing.
In single elimination quarterfinal play they faced a tough FC Man United on Saturday. It was an exciting, hard-fought game that ended 0-0 after regulation play and no goals scored in two overtimes. This game was settled in thrilling fashion with penalty kicks (PK) in our favor, 3-2!
In an equally dramatic semifinal game the following morning the girls tangled with the LA Galaxy South Bay. Once again they found themselves fighting for their proverbial lives in penalty kicks. Our girls pulled off a miraculous 2-1 PK win!
It was on to the State Cup Finals against the Oceanside Breakers at the Inland Empire Soccer Complex in San Bernardino the following weekend. Yet again it was 50 minutes of tough play, 10 minutes of overtime, and onto penalty kicks. In classic “one team” fashion our girls tied the PK score at 2-2 with our fifth and final shooter and the game was settled. The team is the 2015 State Cup co-champs!
It was then we learned the meaning of T-E-A-M. Did we have the MVP offense? No. Did we have the most fearless defense? No. Did we have a group of girls who worked hard for two seasons and demonstrated that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts? Absolutely!
Congratulations to the GU10 Scripps United 2015 State Cup co-champs.
