Boys U-14 Soccer Team Wins League Championship
The Scripps United U-14 boys won the AA-A championship in November by beating Pegasus 2-0 at the community park. The victory was the third “must win” game in a row that the boys faced in the final three weeks of the season.
After a tie in Coronado put the title in jeopardy in this very tough division, the boys defeated the 4th place San Diego Fire 3-1, the 2nd place Olympicos 3-2, and then the 1st place Pegasus 2-0, to take over the top spot. The boys are now positioned to move to the AAA level for next season. Not known to rest on their glory, the boys one week later won the Poway Thanksgiving tournament U-14 title in a come-from-behind 3-2 final over the R.B. Nomads.
In four tournaments this year, the boys have won gold medals in the Escondido, Encinitas, and Poway tournaments and a silver medal in the Villa tournament. The boys and Coach Karim Ben Marzouk are having an outstanding season.
Girls U-12 Win the Silver
While most of Scripps Ranch families were enjoying their Thanksgiving feast, Scripps United girls U-12 team was making their way to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Turkey Shoot, a three-day tournament that attracts teams from all over the western United States.
The team consists of Amanda Balaloing, Jill Comrie, Elizabeth Cunningham, Ellen Dunn, Emily Finely, Katie Hebert, Lauren Heying, Taylor Hine, Alyse Lasater, Kara Robinson, Denise Russell, Tracy Sprague, Lauren Steer, and Emily Wiesner with coach Larry Szafraniec providing outstanding guidance, leadership, and direction with assistance from Cha-Cha Namdar. Not present at the tournament were Ellen Dunn and Emily Finely whose good wishes and words of encouragement inspired each person on the team.
Because our team works together, like a well-oiled machine, we were able to achieve a high level of success. With only one sub, our girls were relentless in their pursuit for victory. Our record consisted of a 2-0 shut out, a 0-2 loss, 4-0 shut out, and a 0-0 tie. While losing the final match for the gold against the Layton Utah Strikers (0-2), the team’s spirit never wavered. In fact our opponent commended us for our good sportsmanship and camaraderie. But, as coach Larry said as the girls received their medals, we were going home winners; more important, we were going home knowing that we gave it our all.
Oh yea, one more thing. Coach Larry, you look great in pink, but that’s another story.
Mandatory clinics for all girls 7 and over will be held at Cypress Canyon Park in January. Six year olds that wish to be considered for the Rookies division also must attend. Players whose last names begin with A-M are scheduled on Saturday, Jan. 13, and N-Z on Saturday, Jan. 20. Girls that cannot attend on their scheduled day may attend on the other date if necessary. For further details and specific times, please visit the Scripps Ranch Softball Association (SRSA) website [www.eteamz.com/srsa]. Those players who have not yet registered may complete their registration, space permitting, at the clinics, if they arrive 15 minutes early.
The draft will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, with teams announced at a league-wide parents’ meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Other topics to be covered at the meeting include: the league budget, what every parent and coach should know about safety, our website, parent volunteer opportunities, our popular Padres night, and opening and closing ceremonies. If your daughter is playing this year, plan on attending.
SRSA is pleased to sponsor two coaching clinics this year, one for the younger divisions and one for the older divisions. We’re also excited about an opportunity for our coaches to attend a clinic at UCSD on Sunday, Feb. 25. The American Softball Association has contracted with Dot Richardson to conduct her coaching clinics throughout the state, and we’re lucky to have one so close.
We’re also lucky that through the combined efforts of the Scripps Ranch Planning Group, Recreation Council, SRCA, Little League, Pony League, and SRSA, we are getting four batting cages in Scripps Ranch. Construction should begin soon with the cages available to our players this spring.
Falcons 11 and Under
Scripps Ranch Falcon’s 11-and-under baseball team, coached by Cory Burnell and Ryan James with general manager George Pecoraro, won the AABC San Diego Region 2000 winterball championship. Some of the highlights of the season are the victories from the Poway Labor Day tournament as well as the San Clemente tournament in October. Congratulations to all the players, who are pictured to the right. Way to go Falcons!
