The Old Pro’s are really athletic this month with night soccer, night softball, and Sunday soccer all beginning. We’d love to have you come and watch. Cheerleaders are always welcome!
Our new Sunday softball league begins on Sunday, May 6. The league runs for 14 weeks and consists of both an open league and a senior league (40 and over). If you are interested in signing up, please contact Joe Wulkowicz at 566-4206 or email [[email protected]].
Please remember that the Scripps Ranch Old Pro’s have an open application for student athlete scholarships. You must be a Scripps Ranch Resident for the last two years and graduate by June 2001. For more information, contact Steve Northcote at 695-6858.
It may seem a bit premature to you, but plans for the 2001-02 soccer season are well underway! In February at our annual general meeting, the new soccer board was elected. This year the Executive Board consists of: President Joe Barr; Vice President Niven Howlett; new board member and Vice President Bob Scharf; new board member and Secretary Lisa Roth; and returning board member and Treasurer Rex Beatty.
Other board members include Ailene McManus and Mary Nasland. Returning board members are Jerry Matthews, Keith Datko, Bob Ilko, Ken Marra, and Oren Patashnik. We wish all our board members a successful, smooth operating year!
Special thanks to our retiring board member Charlie Stenzel, who has been a volunteer for the club more than 20 years. Charlie was one of the founding fathers of the Scripps Ranch Soccer Club and was an author of the original by-laws. His latest position on the board was Treasurer, but Charlie has done it all throughout his Scripps Ranch soccer career. His wife Elinor has been soccer mom extraordinaire by helping out whenever she can.
The Stenzel’s have been such hard-working volunteers from the time their grown kids started playing in Division 7 many years ago. We’re glad Charlie will be taking his well-earned break, but I have a funny feeling we’ll still be seeing him around on the soccer fields!
Watch for recreational sign-ups usually held the first two weekends in May. Flyers will be distributed. Competitive tryouts for teams U-15 and older will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15, and the time and location will be announced. Please check the website [www.scrippsranch.com/soccer] for more information.
With so many new businesses springing up, we are hoping to get many more sponsors this year. Your donations are extremely important to our kids and our club. We hope all those who have sponsored in the past will continue to do so and urge you to ask your company if they would like to become a sponsor. Forms will be available at registration.
Lastly, a big thank you to our Scripps Ranch Starbucks. When our club hosted the Presidio County Cup tournament at the community park, Starbucks was extremely generous in donating coffee to our girls U-15 team’s snack bar both weekends. The employees were always so friendly, courteous, and helpful whenever we picked up or dropped off the supplies.
As the 2001 Little League opens, we welcome the sun and hopefully say goodbye to the rain. Opening Day ceremonies and barbecue, as well as pictures, were a success thanks to the efforts of many people. Pictures were completed just as the first rain drops started to fall with make-up pictures scheduled for Sunday, April 8, from 10 am to 2 pm. A special thank you to Bob Cluck for his speech during Opening Day ceremonies. Bob is a scout for the Montreal Expos and his experience was a true inspiration to everyone. Another big thank you to San Diego School of Baseball for providing a fast pitch booth which was a lot of fun for all who participated.
The first games of the season were officially held on Saturday, March 17. What a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Please be as patient as possible while the league and your coaches attempt to reschedule the games that were cancelled during the first couple weeks of the season due to the weather.
The league is in need of a new Fall Ball Coordinator for the 2001 season which begins in September. Anyone who may be interested can call the hotline at 578-0248 and leave a message or contact the league via the website at [www.scrippsranch.com/baseball].
Good luck to everyone!
