Baseball: It’s All About the Kids

I was speaking with a co-worker who related a timeless story about when his youngest son, now 24 years old, participated in his first year of Little League; I’d like to share it with you.

The father came home from work, quite disappointed that he had missed his son’s first Little League game. Over dinner, he asked his son how he did at the game. The boy looked down and with a rather sad tone said, “OK”. “Did you get to play?” his father asked. “Yes, three innings,” came the reply. “Did you get to bat?” came the next question. “Once,” answered the son. “What position did you play in the field,” the father pursued. “Right field,” the son mumbled. “Did anyone hit the ball out there?” “Twice,” came the reply. A little frustrated with the one and two word responses, the father asked, “Well, what happened?” At this, the son raised his head and with a big smile on his face said, “They missed me!”

Let us try not to lose sight of those little successes based on a child’s perception. Support them in all that we do and say.

SRLL would like to thank the friends, siblings, and parents who have learned it isn’t that easy to officiate a baseball game. We have experienced an unusual amount of absenteeism from our youth umpires this year, and appreciate those of you who have “stepped up to the plate” (or the baseline). We are working on a solution, especially as the playoffs begin the last week of May.

If you haven’t been by to see them yet, please visit the newest addition to Jerabek Park: two new scoreboards. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to Teresa and Tim Cronin and A.G. Edwards for donating the money, as well as much time and effort, for these beauties. Assisting in the project were Lou Morris, contractor, Oren Patashnik maneuvering through city hall red tape, and Tom and Tracey Cabral, owners of Ad-Quick Signs putting on the finishing touches. Thank you!

A couple of dates to remember:

Saturday, June 9: T-Ball Closing Day at Miramar Ranch School

Thursday, June 16: MAPs – Majors Closing Day at Jerabek Park and sign-ups for Fall Ball for players league age 8-11 this season (pending a volunteer or two step up to run the season)

We will have a few festivities at each along with distribution of trophies. All players in T-Ball and CAPs and first place teams in each division of MAPs through Majors receive trophies from the League.

And last but certainly not least, thank you to all the adults that make this League possible; the 45 people on the Board, the 200 managers and coaches, the sponsors, and the parents. Have a safe and happy summer, “have a catch” with your kids, and we’ll see you next year. And to those of you who have “graduating” twelve year olds, it’s been a pleasure and good luck in Pony League

Scripps United Boys U14 Soccer

Advancing further than any Scripps Ranch team in history, the Boys U14 entered the Round of 8 in the State Cup Open Championship on April 28. Starting in a field of 60 of the best teams in Southern California, this AA rated team took on AAA and Premier competition over three weekends of play in Bakersfield and Lancaster. The boys won their division in the preliminary round with convincing victories over the Murrietta Hawks and the Chula Vista Rangers, and a come from behind tie of the Coast Leagues AAA Atlas team. They completed their run for the State Cup title with a 4-1-1 record. Congratulations, boys and coaches!
