Congratulations to our first ever state champions in soccer. The Scripps Ranch Soccer Club Boys Under 15 team, coached by Karim Ben-Marzouk, are the champions of the 2002 CYSA-S State Cup Open Soccer Tournament. They placed first out of a field of 64 teams by playing suffocating defense, ball control midfield, along with slashing opportunistic offense.
The team sent eight other teams packing on their way to the championship. Teams came from all over Southern California and included: West Covina Express (7-1), PSC (1-1), RSF Attack (6-1), OJSC Elite (4-0), Cruz Azul (1-0), CSCSD Crusaders Red (6-1), Forest FC (3-2), and the South Bay Gunners (1-0).
The offensive scoring machine put up 29 goals for the tournament and was lead by captains Brad Van-Lom and Damian Villalva. The offensive team included Gerrardo Flores, Kurt Fleischman, Daniel Valdez, Alfredo Parra, Craig Von Kalinowski, Matt Wimmer, Alan Ismaj, and Aldo Santiago.
The stingy defense allowed only five goals in eight games. Three games, including the final, were shutouts! Goalie David White, Mark Urbino, Kevin Ott-Wright, Chris Supergan, Adam Boisvert, and Ryan Hageman made up the defense.
