Bryon Solberg Promoted to Scoutmaster Emeritus
Dr. Bryon Solberg was honored for his years of contribution and leadership to Scripps Ranch Boy Scout Troop 301, which he founded. After nearly 11 years as scoutmaster, Bryon decided it was time to retire. To honor his many, many accomplishments, Troop 301 members—old and new—planned a ceremony for Dr. Bryon, as he is affectionately called, to promote him to his new role as Scoutmaster Emeritus.
More than 150 current and past troop members attended the ceremony. The evening began with a video timeline of Troop 301. Then there were skits, speakers, and a plaque presentation. There was also a photo booth with signs of Dr. Bryon’s famous sayings, such as “Oooooooh, aaaaaaah, impressive!” The evening ended with a group photo of some of the young men who became Eagle Scouts under Dr. Bryon’s leadership (right).
Wanting a better scouting experience for his own sons, one more like his own, Bryon chartered Troop 301 on Jan. 2, 2007. It started with 23 scouts and quickly grew to more than 40 in two months. Now the troop is going strong at 68+. Retention from year to year is more than 95%.
Since forming, Troop 301 has had 65 scouts earn the rank of Eagle—67% of all Troop 301 scouts! Currently, there are 12 young men working toward Eagle—ranging from approval of the idea or concept of their project to turning in their Eagle binder and awaiting their Board of Review. A program with such success could not exist without a quality scoutmaster like Dr. Bryon.
Bryon and both of his sons are Eagle Scouts, as is his father. His older son, Josh, earned his rank in 2010 and Garrett in 2013. Bryon’s dad, Gerry Solberg, earned his Eagle Scout award in 1952 in North Dakota. They are a proud three-generation Eagle Scout family!
Dr. Bryon has had a lifelong commitment to Scouting. He was an excellent scoutmaster, leading a quality program in Troop 301. Through Dr. Bryon’s vision, he created a culture of excellence, where there are many opportunities to advance to the rank of Eagle. Because of this culture scouts no longer wonder if they will achieve the rank of Eagle, but rather when. Dr. Bryon Solberg also was awarded Scoutmaster of the Year in 2016 by the San Diego-Imperial Council—a well-deserved honor!
Bryon has given back to his community in many ways beyond Scouting. He was a coach for his sons’ baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and cross country teams. He has served as a volunteer on hospital committees and helped at his church and local schools. He has been recognized for his many volunteer efforts, including receiving the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Distinguished Volunteer honor four times and the Congressional Award in 2013.
Yet there is one title that stands out in all of his community involvement—the self-proclaimed title of “a grateful CAF volunteer.” The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) mission is to provide opportunities and support for people with physical challenges so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
It wasn’t that long ago that Bryon was one of the people helped by CAF. In February 2000 he was diagnosed with a missing odontoid bone in his spine. He underwent several surgeries but never regained the control in his hands necessary to continue practicing as an anesthesiologist in Oregon.
Bryon and his family moved to Scripps Ranch in 2001 and in 2002 he began working with CAF in his own recovery. Post-surgery, Bryon has completed more than 100 marathons and numerous half-marathons and triathlons.
Dr. Bryon’s devotion to help people achieve their best extends beyond Scouting and Troop 301—it reaches to his community. Bryon promotes the Boy Scouts of America program to the fullest but also motivates people through his other volunteer work. Encouraging and mentoring both youth and adults in every area of his life is what we have all come to expect from Dr. Bryon. Our scouts, parents, and so many others in the community have benefited greatly because of Dr. Bryon’s kind and generous spirit. Congratulations on being named Scoutmaster Emeritus!
