Buying local is simply the concept of buying food produced, grown, or raised as close to home as possible. There are many benefits to buying local:
- Local produce is usually fresher
- Local food supports local farmers
- Buying local helps protect the environment
- Buying local preserves agricultural diversity
- Neighbors can exchange their excess produce via the new SSR Garden shares
The San Diego County Farm Bureau is a non-profit organization that represents San Diego agriculture through public relations, education, and public policy advocacy. It promotes economically viability agriculture balanced with appropriate natural resource management.
Eric Larson, the Farm Bureau’s Executive Director, will give us details about California and San Diego Agriculture, local trends in sustainable agricultural practices (e.g., in the face of limited water supplies) and ways we can obtain local agricultural products.
Following the talk, if people are interested we’ll coordinate an SSR visit to a local winery or farm.
