The Images of War

The images of war and the American soldiers and Marines in action have filled our TV screens as never before. The concept of "embedding" a journalist with specific units appears to be working well for democracy in action.

We see the action up close and in real time. Also, the journalist then reports from familiarity and a sense of belonging to the unit. Sharing food and danger, among other things, tends to bond them into what we combat soldiers call the "brotherhood of arms."

The downside is you can see fine Americans die, which is never pleasant. As a citizen soldier I see the infantrymen, tankers, and artillerymen doing their jobs in a highly professional manner. I personally feel a tremendous sense of pride, and I hope you share this.

To all our gallant servicemen and women, we pray for your safety and success in the mission. May you come home confident you have done your duty.
